  • I think people don't apply to HM as much because of the commute for dc, without a car, it's a pain for the parents to get there by public transportation for school involvement, and after 9/11, people are thinking about what to do in case of terrorism (given the distance)...

          • does anyone have any real numbers? what was the number of applicants last year and how does it compare to other schools? an earlier post suggested that Dalton received 1500 applications.

            • I don't know if anyone has real numbers, but I imagine the "hill" schools have fewer applicants for K.

              • FWIW - PSD told me fewer Manhattan applicants for FL versus ECFS for K. But we declined HM in part because of the distance and DC's age. Long bus ride is prob fine for middle or HS.

                • yes, but also fewer spots. there are literally 6 spots at FL for manhattan applicants, vs. 36 spots at EC which almost all go to manhattan kids. So unless 6x the number of kids apply to EC, it is still much, much harder to get into FL from manhattan than EC.

            • OP: I was merely talking about Manhattanites who apply to all the TTs except for HM bec of geography. I'm sure HM receives a lot of applications. They get applications from Westchester and other burbs, too.

                • np - Are you saying that natives are mostly WASPs and not Jews?

                • ewwww, Jews? In New York? I can deal with black people, gays, and hispanics, but jews just skeeve me out. I didn't think they were allowed at the good private schools!

    • I didn't apply to HM because I was not interested at all. It had nothing to do with the location.

    • Gotta say, we didn't apply to any Hill Schools for that very reason. The 9/11 disaster and then the blackout. We were very happy that older dc was in a Manhattan school at those times!
