  • Looking for suggestions. Been out of the workforce for many years and I have a BA. Eventually I'd like to go to grad school. In the meantime, can anyone suggest job ideas that are a step above a salesclerk at the Container Store. I've already looked into substitute teaching. Anything ideas would be great! TIA

      • I've done a lot of volunteer work with my kids' schools over the years. I have no preference in terms of people-job. Skills? The basics I guess, general computer know-how, I relate well to people. Yipes. I'm doomed. :)

      • That would be the ideal for me, a teachers aide at my kids' school. What steps did you take to work there. And are you in NYC? I'd also would love to work in a library. ---OP

        • for library, you need to take a civil service exam, which is probably a link on yuor local gov't's website. for my kids' school, i started out like every other volunteer mom and one day the principal saw me drop off my ds's and i was on my way to a job interview. she asked for a copy of my resume and asked me if i'd be interested in helping out their as an employee rather than a volunteer. you can certainly go into the principal and ask her if they need anyone. good luck - it doen't pay well, but it's nice to be on the same sched as your children and bring in a few extra $$. someday, when my boys are old enough, i'll go back to working in manhattan

            • yes, i would have done that in my situation if i ever had thought at the time that they'd hire me. it was just a happy accident that she saw me on the very day she was "looking for me." see if you can get an appointment with him/her.
