Are their any advantages to taking ERBs at office instead of at preschool? Opting for former for my dc but worried that it might be a mistake. Any insights & experience would be appreciated.

my dd did fine but there were 3-4 other kids that had issues with the seperation. I think it also had to do with the psychologist that came out. There are many different ones so you could imagine the different approaches they all have to new dc. One lady came out to a little boy who looked scared and said I'm Dr. So and so..the kid heard the name Dr and freaked out. My #2 dd will take it in her preschool this Sept

Absolutely dc is less likely to rush through it at the office than at school where he/she may feel like he/she is missing out. It totally depends on the kid though.
[ Reply | Options ]OP: I think I worry about the school's preconceived notions of my child being shared with the tester behind closed doors. Am I just being paranoid?
[ Reply | Options ]I don't know, I never thought about that, but I guess it is possible & could either hurt or help depending. We took dc to the office b/c we didn't want her rushing - her teacher advised this.
[ Reply | Options ]np: the kids don't rush when they take it at school. NEver heard of such a concern.
[ Reply | Options ]Of course some do. Some kids love being part of the class & don;t want to miss anything that is going on.

You do have to understand that while that may be true for the majority of children, it is not true for all.

My dc's school put a positive spin on the test taking- that it would be fun. The kids wanted to have their turn taking the test. I don't recall hearing about any dc's rushing through it so they could go back to the class activity. Of course this is not true for all, but definitely for most.
[ Reply | Options ]It is just absurd that you seem to think that no children would rush through it at school.
[ Reply | Options ]And it is absurd that you don't think the teachers know how to put a positive spin on it so that the children don't rush through it.
[ Reply | Options ]I am not going to argue about this. The bottom line, OP, if you are there is that it is in the school's best interests to have the children score high on the ERB and the schools do a fine job of communicating the positive experience the children will have taking the test at the school.

I think you are better off having dc take it at school. If he is having an off day or didn't get enough sleep the night before the teachers will recognize that and have him tested another day. He will be more comfortable at school. Even if your dc has no separation issues what if there are other children at the ERB office who come out crying? Could throw him off.
[ Reply | Options ]I have had 2 dcs take the ERB at preschool & 2 dcs take it at the office & I would say hands down it is better in the school. Obviously you don't know if you dc will have separation issues but if they do at the office you have no choice but to go home & scheduel for another time, & now your dc associates the test w/fear & crying. Why take that chance? In the school setting the teacher has the latitude to choose which child gets tested & in what order - if she is good, she sends off the strong kids first who come back & report how the "nice lady gave them a sticker" & after that all the kids, even the shy ones, are thrilled to go off & have their "special time". The teacher can also see if a child is coming down with a cold or is overtired & not send them for the test on that day. Overall, a no brainer, take it in the school.
[ Reply | Options ]LOL. HARDLY a "no-brainer". If a dc loves school and is the type to rush to finish so as not to miss out on something in class, it's a much better idea to take kid to office. Also, you know the date ahead of time and can ensure a good night's sleep and good breakfast. Totally depends on the kid. Shy kids or those who could take or leave school might be better tested at school, but kids like my dc should be tested at office, imo.

I think it really depends on your kid. I had my DD take it at preschool; she's shy and reticent with strangers so I thought the familiarity of the school would be good for her (she got a 99/97/98, so I guess it worked). I'm going to have my DS take it at the center; he's outgoing and not at all shy (but I am worried he'd rush at school if the class was doing something he didn't want to miss).
