    • no. I stopped splenda and I felt SO much better afterward. I hadn't even realized how shitty that poison was making me feel. Try upping your protein.

        • Splenda made me feel shaky and headachy, with this chemical aftertaste in my mouth. I used it for a long time, because I was trying to lose weight, until I read this study that showed that people actually GAIN using artificial sweeteners because it intensifies their craving for sweets. So I switched. And it didn't affect my weight loss at all, and the shaky, headachy feeling stopped.

          • Want to know what else artificial sweeteners do to the body? They raise cholesterol levels and can cause early onset diabetes. The reason is simple: when your taste buds sense something sweet, they send a signal to your hypothalamus to produce more insulin, because *sugar* is on its way down the hatch. Only ... you've fooled the body. It's not really sugar. If you do this enough, your body will have a dangerous insulin imbalance. In a HEALTHY body, best-case scenario, the body will break down the insulin and flush it out. But guess what it's broken down into? CHOLESTEROL. And in the process of "flushing", some of it sticks to your blood vessel walls. Get the picture? Now imagine this process happening over the course of 10, 20, 30 years' worth of Diet Cokes, and Equal/Sweet'n'Low/Splenda-infused coffees and teas.

              • I did too until wised up. Besides the artificial sweeteners, the artificial colors and flavors are also doing nasty things to your body. And the carbonation isn't exactly the best thing, either. I hate to sound like a bore, but the best things to drink are water and iced teas (not that powdered or Arizona or Snapple crap, either -- FRESH BREWED unsweetened teas). Or fresh squeezed (NOT from a mix) lemonade ... sweetened with either real, old-fashioned sugar (just enough to cut the sourness) or succarat or agava nectar.

                • I drink tons of unsweetened black tea, too. Is seltzer okay? I know it's carbonated, but no sweeteners. I give it to my 5 yo, too.

                  • Seltzer is OK, but not great. Definitely don't give it to children.

                      • The carbonation leeches calcium from their bones. This is bad for an adult, terrible for a child with growing bones. Carbonated beverages also burden the body by weakening stomach acid, thereby interfering with proper digestion.

                        • You're welcome. Rule of thumb: Keep it NATURAL. Sugar is not our enemy. Too much of it, of course, is not good. But CHEMICALS are never good. If you're going to indulge, do it wisely but naturally.

                        • ^^^And if you MUST have a Coke, have a Coke. Once or twice a WEEK. Full-sugar. EIGHT ounces. But I'll bet once you're weaned off of it you'll not crave it anymore. Worked for me. I'm soft drink-free for nearly a year now, and can't imagine going back.

                        • np-and have it during passover, because then they make it with real sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup

                • np-same here. I was never a diet soda fan, but ate plenty of artificial sweeteners, have now COMPLETELY given them up in favor of natural sweeteners, as above poster said--sugar, agave, Sucanat, honey.
