How does one go about finding a rent-stabilized apt. in NYC? Are there brokers, buildings listed on Google?

I could never find one! The best deals I got were through private landlords, without broker fees, it's a lot of foot work!

Thank you so much! Finally, someone who is willing to share useful information. I bet you work in non-profit also.
[ Reply | Options ]HAHA!!! i dont work but full time single mom AND full time student. i also have food stamps and WIC but dont get much more help. call 311 ask how to apply for section 8 or something similar, the city offers that. good luck
[ Reply | Options ]She probably would not qualify for section 8, it's a gift for life and not given out too easily.
[ Reply | Options ]You don't get much more help than that? What more could you get? You're getiing a college education, cheap rent for a 3 bedroom and food stamps.
[ Reply | Options ]well, no one helps me w the child. as in im with him at all times. have not had 1 day off in 10 months. im so so tired and lonely;). no child support.

Yeah, a single parent who gets $10,000 + a month in alimony and child support after divorce settlement. Give me a break.
[ Reply | Options ]maybe you were not single from the start. some are luckier than others...my friend got me a gift card for a massage for my bday in december. (she said i really need it) and i STILL never got 1 day off to use it!!!!!!!
[ Reply | Options ]you are so rude!! i work so hard here i have a leg and back injury from lifting things and doing everything on my own. you think wishing for 1 damn day off and away from my child to get a massage that has given to me as a gift is asking for so much???? you dont know my entire situation so give me a break!!! get over it. move on.

Yes, you do have child support, tax payers, we pay your rent, for food and for a three bedroom with a view! Who watches your child when you go to school?

I'm calling FAKE or FRAUD. It is very hard to hold onto savings and qualify for food stamp or WIC benefits. So someone is either lying to us or to the government.
[ Reply | Options ]LOL!!! savings meaning baby sitting 1.5 days per week!!! it's not that much savings, trust me;))))))))))) no fraud here
[ Reply | Options ]Of course it is (Fraud), but it's how she was raised and how she will raise her child probably. The other poster who is calling the rest of us who paid our own way entitled is right, yes, we could have done it that way. In a million years I wouldn't even know how to apply for WIC and Section 8, I didn't learn that in my house, I learned, "Get a job".
[ Reply | Options ]I think that most of us were raised to believe that we are supposed to support our own children and ourselves, even when that means sacrifice. Other people only focus on how they can can get as much as they can from the government (often not realizing that this means scamming their neighbors).

who would pay for the child care??? would love to work but would not make enough for childcare. it's a crappy situation, believe me
[ Reply | Options ]You could work, form a childcare coop, live with another single parent, etc. If you have time to go to school, you have time to work more hours at a job that pays.

Did you entitled people work while you went to grad school at Yale, Columbia, and Harvard? What jerks you all are.
[ Reply | Options ]i am doing the same thing, going to school, taking loans and raising a child. what's so awful in that? i dont get it!! i only qualified for section 8 because my apt. used to be income based but then turned into fair market price which is now 4000$. there was no way I could swing that so the city offered me section 8. Mean people you all are! Should I have gone to a shelter?
[ Reply | Options ]Thank you!!! This has been so hard for me. I am so thankful that I have the resources to go to school, have some aid while I get to raise my little one. I also volunteer at a hospital as I am doing some research on people affected by stroke. I hope that one day I can make a good difference in this world. Regardless of how I got to that point.
[ Reply | Options ]Here's the problem. The way Section-8 works is that once approved, you find a landlord willing to accept the voucher. Mitchell Lama apartments reverted to the landlords, not the city. The city couldn't offer you section-8 placement in a ML building. The owners of the former ML buildings would have to be willing to take the voucher. And because the rent limit for a three bedroom ($1725) is so far below the $4K you cited, we would have to believe that your landlord loved you so much that they were willing to take a huge cut in rent in order to keep you. Not buying it.
[ Reply | Options ]there is no "problem". HERE is how this works: ive lived here all my life. apt turned into market rate a couple of years ago. i was offered section 8 (everyone living here has section 8 btw) and i took it. The rent is now 4500$ per month but what we pay is 1250$ per month for 3 bedrooms. My roomate pays 625$ and I pay 625$. Section is covers up to 4500$. The landlord gets it all. He def charges way to much for how the apt looks.
[ Reply | Options ]you are so funny! i am in this situation, not you. my apt is 4500$ per month, I pay 1250$ out of that, section 8 pays the rest. Bottom line. Why would I be making this up? This is getting out of hand. There are many different situations and just because you searched that on line and came up with this result does not mean it is universal. I think section 8 is being ripped off by the landlord to be honest.
[ Reply | Options ]This is not how section-8 works. There are not many situations, there is ONE section-8 program. There are other housing programs, but there are not many applications of Section-8. And there is simply no way that your landlord is collecting more than tenants portion plus the voucher limit.
