  • Has anyone gone sailing with an infant? My DD is 6 months and we own a 36 foot sailboat which we keep on a mooring. DD has life vest and we have a dinghy, but I'm still nervous of course about safety, but also about keeping DD occupied and happy. There is not much room for swings, bouncy chairs, etc... Does anyone have any good advice (other than sell boat immediately) re: safety and toys/things to do with a baby on a boat?

    • I definitely would not put her in a swing etc. on a boat b/c the life jacket would do no good then...

    • we took dd on il's boat when she was about that age. it's very hard. hard to entertain them, hard to hold on to a baby with a life jacket, she HATED the life jacket and screamed the whole time, hard to keep her from getting sunburned.

      • Ugh...I know! DD is not easy, sun is enemy - plus 2 and 1/2 hour drive to get there! But, DH is crazy about boat and hate to end what used to be such a fun time for us. Friends (with out kids) urging me to fit baby into our life, instead of the other way around and baby will adjust...is that fair?? Right now, find myself dreading the weekends, or praying for rain!

        • by this time next year, it won't be a problem at all. at that age, dd LOVED going on the boat, and would help put the life jacket on. it's really just a temporary hiatus. :-)

    • Doesn't sound like a good combo (baby/sailing) but I'm sure some people do it.

    • We went out on my sister's boat a few times when DS was that age. I can't say it was terribly enjoyable. He hated the lifejacket, and there was no place to safely put him down. Smaller boat though, you may be more comfortable on yours.

    • I think that putting the vest on for awhile a couple days before may make it better so that dd can get used to in in an environment that she is comfortable with. I would definitely not go if it was anything but nice and calm out...

      • we did that, and it was still a pretty painful experience. we were also in a very calm cove on a lake. good luck!
