    • For me, it would be which feels more like home. I also think that SC would be preferable from a climate standpoint.

    • What's Pawley's island like? Where do you vacation there? Is it super hot in the summer? You know, I think its really hard, maybe even too hard, to decide what you'll want 30 years from now. Where will all of your friends be? Will that even matter? Maybe you'll be more sensitive to the heat...or to the cold.

          • do you rent a condo or a house? What airport do you fly into? Or do you drive? Do you bring young kids?

            • condo. we fly into Myrtle Beach. we're usually able to get a direct flight, which is an hour and a half, gate to gate. we rent a car and the drive is about 20 minutes south. you can also fly into Charleston. The drive from there is a little less than 2 hours. dd was actually conceived there. it's a great place for kids of all ages. all the condos have pools that are shared with other with other residents. we always like to end a beach day at the pool, and dd much preferred the pool to the beach with she was little.

              • thanks, it looks really nice a low key too. Are there any condos developments in particular that you would recommend? Also, is it nice in March/April, or do you have to wait until the summer? Do you ever go in August?

                • We prefer the off-ocean units. We've stayed at Heron Marsh, Osprey Watch, Oystercatcher, and Pelican Watch. We also stayed at Bridgewater. Heron Marsh are the cheapest, but it's also the oldest (although many units have been renovated at this point). It also has the largest number of units, which makes the pool very crowded. We prefer the other 3. They're all nice. There's a new batch that look really high-end but we've never stayed there.

                  • ^^^we've never gone in August but it's probably a lot like July, which is when we go. It can be quite hot midday...nap time! Never been in the spring, but I imagine it's really nice then. warm but not hot

      • definitely. they have everything from 2 bedroom condos for a small family to multibedroom houses for a family reunion. great restaurants too. and as New Yorkers, you know how hard it is to find that outside the New York area

    • you need to think about the services for seniors each state will provide unless you are able to pay for them out of pocket. my guess is that CT has more programs set up to help with health care, tax relief, transportation services, assisted living etc. It's an important part of deciding where to retire that an organization like AARP provide information regarding.

      • thanks. there actually is a huge retirement community in South Carolina. One of the reasons I DON'T like it. I'm afraid that off-season, it'll just be a bunch of old people riding around in golf carts. Madison seems more of a regular community, although more and more, it's turning into a summer home spot a la Hamptons

        • I like the idea that as a retired person I could still take the bus/train into NYC and see a show or an exhibit - or go to a great restaurant and then go home. Especially if its not during the rush hour and SC summers sound very humid but then again it's humid here, too.

          • that's how I feel too (about the accessibility), and dd will most likely live here after college. but if we were in SC, she'd probably visit as often as she could because she loves it down there.
