  • DH got an offer to transfer to Atlanta. I know nothing about areas, but I want to look at houses on line. What towns should I look at?

      • He would be starting an office for his company, so I guess we could pick the place.

        • Well - I don't know your price range but if you can't afford to be in Buckhead or in the more trendy areas then I'd find a good suburb and make sure his office is there. Are you an NYCer? Atlanta may be a shock - so sprawled out and terrible horrible traffic. But if you can work and live in the city it may be kind of cool. I think Decatur is good - an unincorporated area that is surrounded by Atlanta proper.

          • Price range would be about a Mil. We lived in NYC, but are now living in Maryland, so we are used to both life styles. We just want a nice town, with good schools. But private is fine too.

            • I think you could a find a decent place anywhere in Atlanta at the million mark - depending on what you're used to. I have no clue where the good public schools are, though. Sorry. My friends live very far north of Atlanta. I know the schools are good but it's hardly like living IN Atlanta.

      • Yes, these are all good areas to look. The best private school by far is Westminster. Signed, former Buckhead resident

    • I grew up in Buckhead and it is lovely, if a bit "old school" after living in NYC for 20 years...although there are sections where young families live. The Highlands is nice, too. My niece lives in Decatur, which used to be a no-man's land when I was young, but now is great. You could try Sandy Springs as well, and Roswell is also very nice, but farther out. Everyone is right about the traffic...it is awful. Take that into account, whatever you do. It is a lovely city in many ways, though not as exciting as NYC, but the people are great and it's very diverse.

    • Most important is where his job is. If it is intown, stay intown b/c of traffic. Buckhead is good. VA Highlands can be a bit young and seedy/crime in parts. If you like that area, look in Morningside instead. Some people also like the Emory/North Druid Hills area.

    • I will keep going. Schools, if you stay intown, you will need to do private after elementary school.

    • If office is Buckhead or north, and you want swim/tennis, you need to do East Cobb or Alpharetta/Roswell. Vinings is also nice and closer-in.
