Where to look for non-cheesy dressup/princessy gifts that aren't crazy expensive. Have a 4-year-old birthday party comeing up. Birthday girl said she likes Fancy Nancy things. The mom is NOT into cheesy Disney Princess stuff.

unless you're buying from 18 different sources, scouring the flea markets, and making your own, embrace the cheese. It's fast, cheap, and it passes.

because they promote commercialization and discourage creativity - there's nothing wrong with the archetype of a princess or a mermaid or a fairy or whatever - those are all creative aspects of play. but that's very different than being bombarded by these character images and marketed too heavily as a child-consumer using them.
[ Reply | Options ]I was you - lock, stock, and barrel. But I got tired of trying to prevent all disney things and explain why, to my 4yo dd. I try to balance it, now. I explain to my dd why I don't want it to be the dominant theme, and she does understand that, but she still gets her fix. She gets so much pleasure out of it, and now that she's nearly 6, she's past most of it.
