  • if you could afford a beautiful house in a close suburb with a large yard, fantastic public school system, and great community or a 3 bedroom apt. on the upper west side, which would you choose and why?

      • I have the former and sometimes wish I had the later...I think it is better for the kids living in the burbs thougha nd I like not worrying about getting into and paying a fortune for schooling

    • UWS, no question. The burbs are too isolating, and the UWS is amazing for the park and access to museums, Lincoln Center, etc.

      • lol! I love these responses. You know the burbs have parks. Also, people from the tri-state area take advantage of the museums, Lincoln Center etc. Nothing beats having your very own backyard.

        • oh please...parks with no one in them, yards are isolating, and you have to plan an entire day with endless train rides to do the museums. all I have to do is walk a few blocks. not to mention the time wasted in a commute. no thanks....you can have it.

          • Here is another tidbit for you - people actually socialize in the burbs. We go to story time at the library, we invite people over to our house or meet at the park, there are a ton of festivals to attend. We even have museums. We also have cars so we don't need to take the train. We can explore even more with a car at our disposable.

            • Nice try, but forget it. I grew up in CT, and my family is still there so I know all about the burbs. Have fun at story time and sitting in traffic on the way into the city.

              • Have fun living life within a two block radius of your home. Must be fun going to the same museums again and again and again.

                • LOL. Who said anything about living in a two-block radius? All I said was that I can walk to the museums--and by the way, that's just the handful of world-class museums within walking distance, not to mention the ones just a short bus-ride away. And we get around just fine by public transport...you must be really miserable out there.

                  • I forgot about public transportation. It must be really fun to take a toddlers and infants on the bus and subway. I am moving to the city right now!

                    • It wasn't a problem at all actually. We found it very easy to get around, and a hell of a lot easier than getting them into and out of car seats all day long. Whatever...

    • 3 bedroom in Manhattan but I can’t stand the burbs. Have several friends that have moved, they all adjust but all they do is hang out in their back yards. I like the diversity of NYC, you never know who your going to meet on any given day.

      • Diverse?! Do you actually live in the city? It is extremely segregated. People stick to their own kind.

        • NP, I live in nyc and our life is diverse. Attend ps 3, our building is wonderful mix, our churh is wonderful mix (its huge). You can isolate yourself in nyc, but you dont' have to - and you cannot argue that diversity is not at your fingertips if you seek it.

        • np: Read my post above. People socialize in the city. It is interesting, I lived in the city for many years and found it quite isolating. You were always surrounded by people but there was very little interaction.

            • I did not have kids at that time so maybe that is what made it different. I imagine parents are seeking each other out. When I lived there I found it could be quite lonely, at least in terms of meeting new people.

        • i suppose it depends on which suburb you choose. i find that you get more privacy but you still see people. here's what i like about the suburb. you have the yard and the park. it's nice to have the options. i have a car that i don't have to pay a fortune to park so that we can go places when we need. i can take a walk and dcs can run ahead and it's not a big deal. i have much more space than i could have in the city.

          • np: So true. You really have to research the area well. Perhaps choose an area that has a village/town that you could walk to from your house.

    • We could afford either and much, much prefer the city. One of the biggest reasons (quality of life issues aside and depatable) which is *not* up for debate is the commute time. My dh sees his kids every day and makes it to most school events. Hi suburban colleagues can not say this.

    • 3 bedroom UWS hands down. I don't want grass to cut, or roofs to replace. I want to call the super when something goes wrong. I also don't need a dining room I never use or a living room no one goes in. Space is overated. And, I'm in love with my nyc public school and have a great community both at school and at local playground.
