    • Chicago, 3, think adoption has significant ethical problems (and can be done ethically, but rarely is).

        • International adoption is fraught with corruption, fraud, child trafficking, and outright kidnapping. The organization Ethica is now publicizing the horrendous cases they're trying to address - which are very common. For example, mothers are frequently told by in-country orphanage directors that they will have their children returned to them in a few months when they get back on their feet; when the mothers go back to the orphanage to get their children in a couple of months, they find that the children have been adopted. Many of these women are illiterate and have no idea what they're signing, and are lied to about the documents content. I could go on and on about international adoption - many children are simply taken off the street. Moreover, I think it's unethical to essentially adopt away a poorer country's children. In terms of domestic, many birth mothers agree to place their children only in an open adoption, where they retain contact. After the adoption, they find that they have no legal recourse to enforce the "openness" to which the adoptive parents agreed, and the adoptive parents close the adoption. I'm going to stop now, because this is getting too long, but I have significant concerns about domestic adoption as well.

        • Hundreds of thousands of DOCUMENTED cases vs. your opinion? I'll take reality and fact. Why do you think the U.S. gov't SHUT DOWN adoptions from Guatamala, Vietnam, & other countries? Because of documented violations of children's human rights. And while I think many adoptive parents are wonderful people who are trying hard to do the right thing, I have a very low opinion of people like you, who seem to think that you should be granted a halo and applauded for taking other people's children.

          • np: who said anything about a halo? I agree, you're nuts. There's probably a million above-board adoptions to the few questionable ones.

          • you act as if the entirety of adoption is international adoption. there's domestic adoption as well as the foster-to-adopt program here. get off your horse long enough to see what's going on.

          • I'm not looking for a halo. I wanted children. I didn't consider it a rescue mission. The fact that you assumed so speaks volumes (negatively) about your mindset. Off with you.

    • NYC; 2 kids; believe abortion is a killing of a life, but not sure I would support illegalizing it, but don't understand how many don't want to recognize that the baby isn't a blob of cells as most abortions happen after 7 weeks.

    • Upstate NY, 3, plenty: I have no problem with gay marriage, completely understand illegal immigration and would likely do it myself if I had the misfortune of trying to raise a family on $5 a day, I would never in a million years be friends with a Republican but most members of my family are staunch GOPers and I love them dearly.

    • I don't remember it having any political overtones (though I may have missed them since I was 7-8 when it was popular). It couldn't have been too political since we listened to it in public school. The woman is a freak!
