    • I would be fine with a piece of jewelry, but that's me. I'd like a black pearl pendant necklace

    • This might be too baby center, but for a birthday I took the kids to a paint a pottery place and had had them paint tea pot and mug for dh. Every time he uses it they're pleased and he's pleased. And, you could also get him a gift certificate for a massage.

    • what does she like? I'd personally be happy with a B&N gift certificate, a Fresh gift set, or maybe a spa day, and a nice drawing from the 4 yo.

        • OP: Oh no, we're turning into our parents! When I was a kid, I used to give my mom coupons for things like that. Is this what we've become?

          • sad, but I guess so. Actually, a coupon book from the 4 yo would be cute. "A whine-free day", "Leaving the house without a fight", "10 minutes of quiet". Too bad a kid that age probably couldn't stick to it, though.

            • Yeah, he'd mean it very sincerely, he's such a good egg. No hope of sticking to it, though. He's having a lot of issues not being the only child after dd was born.

              • That must be tough. I have an only who just turned 5. Four was a challenge. So far, five is not much better.

                • Darn. We had our hopes pinned on 5. Terrible twos not so terrible. We called this last year the F*cking Fours, dunno if anyone else calls 'em that, but it cracks us up every time.

                  • For our ds, 5 was the best year ever. He turned into the suniest, sweetest boy after a kind of rough 4. So don't give up yet!

          • np: The gift is from you, not the kids. You take them away for 10 hours and let her do whatever she wants. That is the only way to ensure a whine-free day.

      • OP: I'm so easy to shop for because I'm a coveter. Always talk about things I'd like. She's not very covetous, tho' B&N gift certificate is a good idea. I was thinking the spa day thing, or an in-home chef visit... like on that silly Real Housewives show... oh... wait... extravagant? darn. (Actually I have no idea what that costs.)

          • LOL, are we sure dinner out with me would be a gift for her? Wouldn't that be a gift for me? Sleep would be a better gift, I think, except she has to wake up either to feed or to pump.

    • Yeah, here's a news flash: "Nothing extravagant" means "I'll make a big show of exclaiming how much my gift cost, but I'll secretly be psyched". A right hand diamond ring.

      • Well, in this case I believe it. We just bought a small beach place (2nd home) and are really feeling the pinch atm. I'm on the case of a right hand ring, but not diamond.... June and August birthstones for the kids, but can't find one that'll be ready in time.

        • Then go with something lovely but not over the moon. A beautiful amythest is lovely, and rubies are pretty. Go for something funky.

            • Definetly jewelery. Check out heather moore's line - you can get a casual necklace with dc's names etc. Cooler than it sounds. I love my oversize jade cocktail ring - veyr old fashioned but looks cooler when i wear it on middle right finger. Also love sapphire diamond stacking rings to wear with wedding ring

              • Neat, heather moore's stuff looks like beach glass on the site. Very beachy. Stacking rings... lol... her push present for dc was a ruby stacking ring, and the finger's full! Have to be a right hand ring if I do a ring. :-)

    • Schedule a family shoot with a professional photographer. She'll appreciate the legwork and the thought. Sweet card saying nothing is more important to you than your family and she is the heart of it.

    • A new bicycle would really make me happy. So would a pink Vespa. For intersting, but very reaonable jewelry, try an unlikely place: Astro Gem (across from the Empire State Building). Dh has bought me really cool stuff from there

    • How about something wodnerful for your beach house? An antique print of the town or map od the Town (I like Old Print Center on 2nd and 52nd.....a treasure trove of stuff like this). An old piece of stained glass to hang in a window there...Olde Good Things in Chelsea....a wonderful cashmere throw (good for night nursing, too) that matches your beach bedroom

    • I'm for the jewelry or all day spa. If she'd like the in home chef I don't think it would cost much more than a day at the spa - maybe less.

    • give her a kick ass day. let her sleep late. then breakfast in bed. then a few hours for her to take care of herself (mani/pedi... massage). tell her to get dressed up. perhaps shop for a new dress or whatever. and then either get a sitter and go out. or have some friends over to your place. and have a little party.
