On CHOW: Thanksgiving recipes

  • Live in a rental house. Have a small leak in the basement. Repair guy (paid by landlady) came out and said it would take a whole day with water shut off to fix it. a) must I stay home for the repairs, or can I insist that horrible landlady come to my house to let repair guy in/out/supervise? b) can I ask for a rent reduction due to hassle? (NOT in NY state, in WA state with crappy tenant's rights, so this is more a reasonableness question than legal question)

    • You can say you won't be there but you can't insist landlady stay. Leaks happen -- you are not due compensation.

    • a. you can let her know that you aren't going to be there and it's her choice to stay there. but if i were you, i'd be more worried about theft of your property which is your problem, not hers. b. that's ridiculous. i'd laugh in your face if i was your landlord.

      • Really? But my water will be shut off for a whole day - and this is repair visit number 16 in the last four months. The place is a hellhole, which we stupidly didn't realize moving in.
