am primary breadwinner and dh -- whose salary we needed to make ends meet -- just got laid off. i feel like i've been hit by a truck. anybody have consoling words?
12 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]it's scary. will unemployment help? is he in a field where they are hiring now? i'm excellent at budgeting if you want any tips.
[ Reply | Options ]not op but i would love tips on budgeting, i made more than dh but quit because db was sick in the early months and needed full time nursing care, for the op, i'm so sorry that happened, it is a nightmare, see if you can defer loans if you have any (forbearance request)
[ Reply | Options ]the first thing i'd do is put my expenditures into categories and then cut each category by 10%. (except any debt and mortgage/rent). i think you can cut things by 10% without having it be a huge hardship. if it can't be cut, figure out a dollar amount that would have been 10% and then take that amount out of something else.
[ Reply | Options ]the thing that always gets me is we'd save money if we cut out cable/internet, but what will i do without email, now that i'm not at work it is a main route of communication, ugh, nothing left to cut but that, good bye internet
[ Reply | Options ]switch to juno. i think it's $10/month. there are so many alternatives to everything. you can reduce phone bills by buying calling cards and pyaing per call for local calls (or just paying for a long distance plan and then paying per call for local), reduce cell phone bills by getting a less expensive plan or prepaying per minute and using it for emergencies. you can reduce car insurance. you can cut back on groceries.
