    • We're in the city now, but will probably move to burbs because we can't afford to stay.

    • I feel like i would have less of a life if i moved.. Less company, less dinners out, less drinks.. i know, it's selfish but.

      • you are 100% right - that is what happens. We moved 2 years ago and miss our city life. That being said, I love the burbs for dd. The playgrounds are MUCH less crowded, she has a yard to play as well as a big playroom.

      • It was the opposite for me--I moved to the burb DH and I both grew up in and we have SO much free babysitting. We go out all the time now. Also, being that we are from here, we still have a lot of friends in the area. We were so broke in the city, we couldn't pay for Saturday night babysitting AND a dinner out.

          • It is nice--plus my block has lots of young families who also have lots of free babysitting, so we play a lot of cards, visit for drinks on Sat night, etc.

        • ^But besides that...my real answer is.... are you really rich? Because if you are, then I think the city is fantastic. If not, if you can't take advantage of all the restaurants, night life, museums, etc...why bother. Get a bbq and a backyard. ;-)

            • Rich enough to have a car, rich enough to have a babysitter whenever you need one. Rich enough to afford to send your kids to great schools so you don't have to sweat the public school thing. Rich enough that you aren't living like sardines. You can go on vacation now and then. You send your kids to camp, etc. You go out to great restaurants....

    • city here. lived in burbs while in high school. hated the dependency on a car when you're too young to drive - thus my mom was everyone's chauffeur. love short commute for dh who works long hours, lots of wonderful activities for dc in city. would we love a backyard? sure. But here we have lots of neighbors who are only an elevator ride away that ds can play with.

    • burbs b/c i want the space, backyard, good public schools, etc. if i were v. wealthy (afford a summer home, sleepaway camps, good private schools, a car, etc) my tune might change.

      • Not wealthy but dc goes to sleepaway camp and we have a car. However, no 2nd home and dc goes to public school.

          • I am the poster below you. Yes, we should be able to swing that if the elementary school (public) thing pans out okay. A country house actually seems like a pain to me.

            • We have a summer house and it's the only way I'll live in the city--being able to escape to the beach in the summer is key. It's not a pain at all, we have someone who takes care of the house when we are not there.

    • I really think it depends on a range of factors - HHI, how many parents are working and where they can get jobs (city/burbs), where your family is located, what school district you can afford to live in, what your renting/owning timeline looks like. For us the commute is really our main thing. We both WOHM in midtown and truly maximize our family time and we don't have to worry about schools just yet.
