  • How good a sign is it that although my 2.10 yr old DS has delays (mainly in speech, play, and social skills), he is cognitively typical and already has pre-academic skills of a 3.5-4.0 yr old? I'm trying to stay hopeful for his future, so trust me, this is in no way a brag...just trying to hope there is a silver lining through all of this for him. TIA.

    • Einstein didn't say a word until he was 3

        • I had the same question. The only people who cite this are NT parents.

          • some aspies think it's relevant as well--the ones who think Einstein was spectrum (I don't htink that)

            • NP: I actually do think Einstein was spectrum...though no idea what actual condition

              • It's a myth though. Einstein spoke at two. When his little sister was born he asked "where are the wheels?" He was a top student. The myth started while he was still alive and he refuted it. His sixth grade teacher was still alive when the rumors began and she refuted it. The rumor began because in the family babies all spoke early and he didn't.

      • I know. But my DS has other issues other than a speech delay. If that's all it was, I wouldn't be concerned.

      • Thanks. It's so hard. He's got global delays (gross & fine motor are minimal delayed) - but the speech & social stuff are a 6-8 mo delay at this point. Not sure if he's just delayed or if there will wind up being some underlying issue causing the delays. Scary.

        • np. yes, it really depends on what is causing the delays but the fact that he has good intellectual capacities is positive for outcome. Doesnt mean that he will be nml necessarily but he will be at least high functioning

    • OP, have you seen a dev ped? If not, I would make an appointment with one ASAP. It is the best way to get a better sense of what's going on.

      • Yes, we have. no diagnosis given (at this point anyway). But naturally, no guarantees of what is to come since he's still so young.
