  • Anyone have any opinions on Aaron vs. Reece for a very compliant kid but cognitively below average? I am worried Aaron might kick dc out if not smart enough or that the kids at Reece might have too many behavioral issues...any thoughts?

    • So DC got into both? Then I guess he'd fit in either place. How below average is DC cognitively?

      • Yes dc got into both. Psych test is way below average mostly due to speech - evaluator couldn't understand all answers.

        • well, that doesn't mean he is cognitively below - it means he has articulation issues, right?

          • Yes articulation issues but definitely behind peers in understanding concepts and can't read or write. I was thinking the smaller classes at Reece would be more beneficial at this point. Not having to pay is a definite plus but worried what peers will be like at Reece. I don't want to have a behavior issue down the road but I guess that can happen no matter where dc goes.

        • What does your team think? Talk to neuropsych, preschool teachers and therapists, home therapists. Ask them where they think dc would thrive better. IMO you can't really go wrong at either; Reece is funded, Aaron means years of lawsuits, but Aaron has a greater mix of kids in terms of academic and social abilities.

          • Teachers think Aaron but Lawyer says stay away from Aaron at all costs. That is concerning.

          • Reece parent here. We love the school. Dc doing very well there. Administration and teachers are very warm and helpful. Funded by DOE so we don't have to go thru all of the Carter funding rigamarole. Now that the school is in its new building, they have seena big spike in applications. So the younger classes appear to be higher functioning (hate that term) than some of the older classes. We have found good peer models there and I have not noticed that the kids have more behavioral problems than at any other special needs school.

    • in light of the other post where the mother didn't understand the concept of a sn school, you should only select the sn board for this type of post.

      • Well in this case considering there might be women on the NYC schools board who are familiar with both (though it's unlikely)

        • there might be. when i post about ds's school, i post here. when i post about dd's school, i post on ny school board. i just couldn't get over the nastiness of that person. i would do anything for my ds to be able to go mainstream. no issue with having him at my local public.

          • I read that thread as well. Unreal to me. I often avoid the other boards all together because some women on them are just so nasty it makes me want to avoid UB completely.

        • No, anyone who is is going to be on SN, even if they're on NY Schools also. Any threads about those schools on the NY Schools board usually end up with someone saying "Post to SN for better info." I think we need to be really careful about where we post, after that person.

    • A big factor is this were my decision is that Aaron is a non-funded school which means you pay out of pocket and you can sue for reimbursement. While Reece is an approved school so you don't have to pay anything if he is approved at your CSE meeting.

    • We were strongly considering Reece for our DC (very smart very compliant). I think it's a wonderful place. The only reason we didn't go to Reece was because dc was accepted at GB at the very last minute. I have heard so much about Aaron that I would steer clear.
