          • But the test does not test giftedness so the logic is flawed. The SB tests giftedness.

    • OP : I never thought of my DC as gifted, only really bright and logical. But there was this thing that I noticed, she is very sensitive to certain things. She is very mature about a lot of things, but her fear of certain things was odd. Now that she has been categorized gifted, It kind of gives an explanation to this fear of certain things.

      • can you give an example of one of her unusual fears? and how does the gifted thing explain them? (not challenging you, genuinely curious)

        • examples of fears. The first one was with Mr. Noodle From Elmo's World. They guy who died and had a bald head. She was so afraid of him. I couldn't figure it out, but it was the bald head. I think she thought he was hurt. It mostly happens when she is looking at tv. She did not like to see things falling on people's head. She does not like to see people chased or hurt. When I say does not like , it is a real fear. She leaves the room. She closes her eys and shakes her head no.

          • gifted kids are more intense and feel emotions more... they learn to cope with it. it's not so bad..

          • wow.. makes sense to me. my G/T ds was always afraid of anything with googly eyes. any inanimate object that had eyes would freak him out. i used to go into his room and see that he had turned all dolls or pictures with big eyes to the wall. we had a set of Simpsons dolls that he could not be in the same room with. he's a sociable, funny, smart kid (12yo now).

      • Truly gifted children often look like SN children - the behaviors can be very similar. There's an interesting book about how gifted children are mistaken for SN - don't remember the name but it was in the SN kids section at B&N

    • Any link to clinginess to Mom & giftedness? Of my 3 kids, my brightest child is very needy whereas the other 2 are more normal.

    • DS scored 98 on Olsat and has no behavioral problems whatsoever. He's a perfectly well-adjusted little kid. I think it's a bit of a myth that any DC who is gifted must have issues.

    • Oh, God, here they come: the parents of newly-minted G&T kids who will henceforth damage their children with misconceptions about their special needs and abilities because they performed well on tests that correspond to socio-economic status of parents.

        • No, my child is 12 and has been in an ongoing school for 8 years. I'm comfortable with who she is and know her strengths and weaknesses. I am concerned about parents who jump to label their kids.

          • ^^^ and then use the label as a justification and explanation for everything. Most of us want to raise bright, happy, kind children. It's not about test scores.

            • np: That's not at all what your first post said. There's a process parents of gifted children go through; becoming aware of their child's talents and needs - back off and let OP deal with it

        • And my father left school at the age of 14--I guess there may be a few of us from more working class backgrounds on UB. My point is that testing in general favors children from higher socio-economic backgrounds.
