I used to teach russains. they have a huge sense of entitlement will screw you over for a nickle and don't understand hard work. But I blame that all on a few generations of a failed communist state.
[ Reply | Options ]greedy? My american boyfriend thought that we have to take turns in paying in a restaurants. Talking of Greed. And my russian dh is pouring gifts over me

2 things really bother me about Chinese immigrants: the spitting in the street (accompanied by loud throat clearing noises) and the outright pushing/racing onto the subways, with no regard for anyone else.
[ Reply | Options ]yep, thats what it is like in China. They think we are really rude and weird too
[ Reply | Options ]Is that really true? When I was in China, our tour guide told us that the rudeness resulted from the Maoist position that manners were bourgeois, and should be disregarded in a perfect worker's paradise because they weren't necessary. Therefore, it's a relatively recent phenomenon.
[ Reply | Options ]np: that is interesting; when I lived in Bklyn I noticed all the spitting and pushing (little old ladies too!)
[ Reply | Options ]that's bc most of the immigrants who have come here recently are 1.) from poorer regions where bourgeois manners probably were not practiced 2.) from mainland china. in taiwan--where a good portion of the population were the elite nationalists who escaped the communists--a lot of people practice a system of etiquette pretty similar to japanese. also, the japanese ruled taiwan before the nationalists went over.
[ Reply | Options ]did you know that the spitting laws in the states started on the Lower East Side to curb rising TB rates? and now NYC is one of the communities where TB is making a comeback. think about it a little.

Those people form mainland China look straight down their noses at Americans FYI.
[ Reply | Options ]I have no doubt. Do you know what they dislike? I'm caucasian and live next to Chinatown; am always curious about the view from the other side.
[ Reply | Options ]shoes on subway poles pretty much disgust a good portion of people from other countries. (muslims, pretty much all asians think shoe and feet bottoms are disgusting, so all those hipsters who ride the subway with their shoe soles oh-so-cooly perched on the pole facing the people on the other side are probably grossing them out.)

mainland china is really trying to battle this spitting thing. interestingly enough, chinese do this because they think it keeps them cleaner and healthier on the inside. it's definitely a habit of the less-affluent, less educated...even if their kids are educated, they might still carry on the practice. communism really wiped out a lot of 'bourgeois' habits/manners, traditions, aesthetics...etc

people that are obese do it to themselves, and i get a little grossed out and hate when i see them eat things like mcdonalds and reg. soda.
[ Reply | Options ]see i don't flame obesity as i recognize how few food options the working class has in this country. that beign said i obviously consider obesity a problem of the working class.
[ Reply | Options ]"reg soda" ? you think diet soda is good for you? diet soda is more crappy than regular one. You are such an idiot...

my dd is almost 3, still in a diaper, uses a sippy most of the time, and I still wind up in her bed halfway through the night.

I don't like most Chinese for the very reasons that have been posted above, I judge heavy people, and I judge women with massive heaving rocks on their ring fingers...feel bad for their dh's
[ Reply | Options ]i think preschool teaching is a silly profession.. even though i have preschoolers and loved my own teachers. i also think nursing isn't an occupation for students who attended top tier colleges. and real estate is a profession for overall mediocre people
[ Reply | Options ]wow. A friend received her nursing degree from Colubia--would she be good enough to care for you?
[ Reply | Options ]hmmm... not reaaallly. i mean yale has a nursing school, too. these aren't necc great nursing programs though, so they aren't a measure of how great a student you were. they're just ivy league nursing programs.
[ Reply | Options ]i used to teach humanties to nursing students in the middle of bumblef**k nowhere at some 5th rate nursing school. they were a bunch of strong, supersmart, and bad-ass nurses. it doesn't matter what school. some do it because it's "easy" (but if you do it right, it's not easy) some do it because they mean it.
[ Reply | Options ]
Huh. I really respect those who are well-educated and choose nursing; I have 3 friends/acquaintances who went into nursing when they reached their 30s.
