  • I think it sucks that a school would require a child to be potty trained! Sure, many are by 2.9 or so, but many are not and are just as ready for school. Our school will call a mom to come change a stinky diaper, but most kids can go 3 hours in a wet pullup/diaper

    • some schools are not accredited as a daycare and its required that kids are potty trained- its the law, not up to the schools

      • it has nothing to do with being a daycare. If they don't have to touch the diaper an only have to pick up the phone, what's the big deal? A 1st grader can wear diapers if they have an issue, but the school doesn't have to be a daycare!

        • Are you saying the moms have to be nearby ready to pick up the child? Not the case in our preschool - moms are at work and babysitters not coming until pick up time. Who would change the diaper?

    • I wish our school did require it. Great impetus to get it done.

        • Actually, I was talking about myself -- I'd like to have the push. But I also think most 4 yos shouldn't be walking around marinating in their own waste.

          • I've never known a 4 year old still in diapers unless the child had other issues.

            • I've seen many a UB thread where moms say their kids weren't trained until then (or later). But I hope you're right....

                • well I've never seen any. wait I take that back, I knew a few 4 year old poopers. they would get a diaper to poop into, but in all the years I've dealt with kids (including working in a state run daycare center for 4 years, and 2 preschools) I've yet to see the 4 year old that regularly wore a diaper.

                  • ^^^^ I'm sure there are a few out there, but very few. and those 3 year old new trainers had parents that didn't push.

                    • How is it that in our generation, everyone was trained by 3? I think pushing (with positive reinforcement, not negative) has its merits.

    • The first preschool dd went to (at 2.5) didn't require kids to be potty trained, and they changed diapers. They also worked together with parents with potty training. It was great.

    • I dont, if you want your kid to go to school, potty train him or her. Thats prob. the only reason my kids were potty trained so early- I was forced so I did it

    • The only kids not trained by 2.9 use pullups and/or have permissive parents OR are SN (in which case a school that accepts them should be OK with this).

      • Oh please. Some of us want to wait until dc is ready. DD was close to 2, but ds was not until almost 3. Both got there easily enough.

        • My kids were both "ready", but I didn't put them in diapers with fun designs or pullups. Beige 7th Gen. Underwear was attractive. I'm sure you use pullups. Great if you have shares in Kimberly-Clark, I guess.

          • Never used pull-ups. Diapers to underwear. Still, ds was not interested until almost 3. So what? I prefered to wait until it was warm out anyway.

    • You are ignoring the point that schools don't want the liability of changing diapers, nor your dc's clothes (meaning any chance of being accused of abuse), so the parent is summoned to clean a dc's private areas.

      • Which is fine with me. As I said, they can call parents or have the child in a pull-up. A school can refuse to change a child and state this intheir policy and a parent can decide if they are ok with the extra trips to school in case of an accident

      • np I don't think so. At our school, they'd change diapers during 2.6-3s class. Said that was it, but changed rules for nutty family with kid in diapers at nearly 4 (only kid in the class of 3/4 in diapers).

        • NP: DD's school is a PS-grade 8 catholic school. They required kids to be potty trained by 3yo, but some didn't quite make it and started in pull ups. If there was an accident/poop you had to go in and change them.

      • They are more likely to have to change clothes of potty trained kids. Between accidents and getting wet while using potty, there are quite a lot of changes after potty training is long over.

        • My kid had ONE minor accident in three years of preschool. Hardly the same as changing kid's diaper daily.

      • and they don't need the liability of diapers. Just because they won't change the diapers, doesn't mean they should exclude the child if the parent is willing to ensure that someone will come in case of an accident
