  • I'm reading my son's evaliuations. everything pretty much sucks about him. They actually make him sound like a non-human creature. I think he is great and I really can't believe all these things they are saying about him

      • I do too, but the govt is so stingy that I don't blame them for emphasizing negatives.

        • you mean, they do it secure services? I think a good evaluator can do both- explain the weaknesses and needs that require remediation as well the strengths that should be appreciated and supported

          • I agree but most of the reports I see are written strictly to convince the system that the child needs services. They are not written for the parents or anyone who wants to see the child's strengths. A neuropsych report when the dc is 4, to help them get into K, that's a different story (and a real balancing act).

    • He is great, but these horrible things you are reading will help him get the support he needs in school in order for him to realize his full potential.

    • He's a fantastic kid and those pieces of paper are not him. They are merely the way to get the government to give him the support he needs and deserves. My advice: put 'em away. I don't think reading those evals does any of any good.

    • The evaluations are just brutal to read. They only point out the deficiencies - they're not showing the picture of the whole child. When we received our last eval report from dev ped, it sat on the counter un-opened for a week b/c neither DH nor I had to stomach to read it. I share your pain! Big hug.

    • I'm so sorry - I know they are so depressing to read. I try to remind myself that they are not a true reflection of my child in his entirety...they are really highlighting all of his challenges and then empasizing the worst aspects of those challenges. And I remind myself WHY these reports must be written this way (in order for your child to get services). Nonetheless, it's always upsetting to read it and know it's "out there" in print. Though I also agree with the OR above saying that some strengths should be highlighted...even the most severely disabled child has some strengths! Hang in there, and try not to obsess over them (I know, it's hard).
