We are UB Royalty, and have decided that it is time to hold court. Any questions or concerns that we may address?

It isn't polite to discuss the size of a lady's box. Ditto for UB's. Just be polite.

Because they did not use an information architect/usability engineer on the project.
[ Reply | Options ]The correct answer is that although it is on top, that column's existence is due to the ad.
[ Reply | Options ]There are also many many other ways to get advertising into the site without this particular design. Nevermind that their prime ad space is below the fold...

What I am trying to say is that the ad unit they have chosen is not the only choice. You could have ad units that are above the fold and less invasive to the site design and flow.
[ Reply | Options ]but no web page contains one column of text content from left edge to right edge. that's bad design and bad readability
[ Reply | Options ]Right. So your point is? That they had poor usability/information architects involved?
[ Reply | Options ]A two column layout is not bad. There is a certain horizontal distance the eye can move before it gets tired -- wide text is bad readability. That's why newspapers and magazines have columns and books that are physically wide have a lot of white space in the margins or multi columns. My point is that people are craving old UB features not because they had good design or usability, but because of familiarity.

It seems like there are a lot of operator errors among those complaining about the new boards.
[ Reply | Options ]Just to clarify, you're intimating that the complainers might not be particularly bright?
[ Reply | Options ]I can't say about intelligence but they do remind me of my MIL (a very intelligent woman I must add) who just throws her hands in the air whenever she encounters something on the computer that is not "usual".

NP - it's interesting. There are design flaws that make using the site less fluid. I think a lot of people are giving up on learning the new stuff because it's just not that intuitive. Not to say that you can't learn it but it might be more complicated than it is worth.
[ Reply | Options ]true, and you can't override some of the annoying things. Like...the fact that watched posts are always collapsed.
[ Reply | Options ]I personally don't think it's that difficult. In fact, I do love their addition of General Topics as a board.

BMM - I can't recall her dealio but it was sometime last year with me. I was a bit chagrined that it looks like bowel movement but now I kind of like it. And we now know each other off-site - mostly because we realized that frequently, we were talking to each other when we particularly enjoyed a conversation.

UrbanBaby Asks...
When I ride in a taxi cab with my DC I:
- Use a carseat
- Buckle him/her in his/her own seat
- Hold him/her on my lap
- I'd never ride in a taxi with my DC, it's much too dangerous!
