  • 34 wks and ultrasound is saying my baby is 7lbs 6 oz . . . OB said a c-section or induction at 37 weeks is real possibility if he keeps up this rate of growth. Anyone BTDT? Advice? I'm starting to stress . . .

    • Weight by ultrasound is notoriously inaccurate -- can be off by as much as 2lbs.

      • I agree...off in either direction...I have a friend who delivered a 10 lb baby girl vaginally...ultrasound said she was nearly nine pounds

      • OP: Even if it is off by 2lbs he's still big for 34 weeks according to books/baby websites?

        • Yup. I delivered at 34 weeks and db was 5 lbs 5 oz and doc said she was on the big side of normal.

        • some babies are big. you may be perfectly capable of delivering a big baby.

        • still not a good reason to induce at 37 wkw. You would likely end up with a c-section and baby may not be ready to come out.

    • those things are notoriously wrong. my baby was estimated at 10 lbs and came out 7.12 - I would not agree to a c-section or induction based on this info.

    • They cannot really tell how much the baby weighs from an u/s. They told me db was at most 8 lbs and I he was 10 lbs

    • That is not a good reason to induce at 37 weeks.

    • those are often wrong and often an excuse for your doc to schedule your birth. even if baby is big, nobody can say wheter the bignesswill be a problem ahead of time, especially if a first baby

    • 37 weeks is EARLY. i had a c section b/c of estimated weight, and they were only off by 1/2 lb. but dd has a very large head, both OB and ped said i couldnt have delivered her vaginally. it was scheduled for 2 days past due date

      • OP: Well that is the other issue - his head is BIG . . . already measuring 38 weeks and I've been told my pelvic arch is narrow.

    • i'm sure i'll get flamed for saying this--but i think our bodies are pretty amazing and generally speaking we don't create babies we can't birth. also, like others have posted the weight off of a u/s is really wonky. do you have GD?

    • That is ridiculous. First of all it is probably wrong and second of all I have delivered a 9 lb and a 10 lb baby and it is not a problem. IMO inducing too early is a bigger deal than a big baby

    • Just let it go to term and she'll come out when she's ready. If she's too big to deliver vaginally at that point, OB can give you a c-section. But why plan this when you don't really know how big she will be/if your pelvis/vagina can handle it?

    • absurd. i had 3 9-ponders and 1 10-pounder, no tearing, all well. your doc is looking after his own interests, not yours. to deliver pre-term for this reason is malpractice.

    • I would not do this. My 7lb baby was born at 36+ weeks and spent 2 weeks in the NICU with premature lungs. Also, those u/s estimates are always wrong. You'll probably have an 8lb baby and all will be fine. I had a 9lb baby with no problems. GL!
