I am a bit chubby. 5'7" 147 lbs. I am ok with it but have a big problem finding clothes. I can afford nice stuff but I am intimidated by expensive stores and terrified that I won't be able to fit into anything. Any ideas?

Not OP, but I am a 6/8 and I have trouble fitting into clothes because I am chubby and old and have had a kid. It IS intimidating to go to a store when you do not have a perfect body.
[ Reply | Options ]listen my body is completely morphed since having children and if the clothes dont fit either go up a size or get your clothes tailored (I have to do this with lots of trousers because my legs and but are small but I have alot of extra belly skin from babies)
[ Reply | Options ]It is not a question of things being too small. The problem is that only very few things look decent, given my current problems. I have no idea how I would go about tailoring something. If pants do not cover my butt, I can't quite see what a tailor can do about that.
[ Reply | Options ]buy a bigger size and get a tailor to take in the waist (or anything else that is therefor too big)
[ Reply | Options ]The stuff is cut wrong for someone with skin on the belly, for example. My stomach is not flat anymore, so there are whole sections of clothing that are off-limits. tailoring will not make my stomach flat.
[ Reply | Options ]my stomach isn't flat any more, but properly cut trousers make it look much better. either accept that you will now look different in clothes, or do soemthing to change it.
[ Reply | Options ]you know, plenty of non-skinny older women manage to look just fine. ditch the tank tops and buy some more grown up clothes and call it a day. a-line skirts, full skirts, nice blouses, dresses, etc. all look great on any figure.
[ Reply | Options ]I have NEVER worn tank tops and I can look decent, but I have to stick to a very narrow range of clothes and I always have to be conscious of sucking in the gut, sitting certain ways, wearing a cardigan or jacket etc. I know it can be done, but it is a total pain and makes it very intimidating to go into stores.
[ Reply | Options ]why does this make it intimidating? do you think you're the only person over 120 lbs who buys clothes? and sorry you've never worn tank tops. you seem to have some issues
[ Reply | Options ]No, but shop ladies will tell you that XYZ looks fine and will want you to buy it. I know it looks terrible, but I don't know how to tell them no in a nice way. So, I prefer not to go. tank tops are too informal for me.
[ Reply | Options ]I got over that a long time ago. You have to try things on to know if you like them, but if you don't like it, you don't buy it. Why would you let yourself be intimidated by someone who sells clothing for a living any way? no offense to sales assistants, some are very nice and very good at their jobs, but...

it is all about trial and error. once you find a cut and brand that works well on you you buy a bunch in every color. this is true for most women of any size, all body shapes are different.

np-That is so depressing. I'm currently a size 14 and I'm working really hard to get down to where you and OP are. I thought things were going to be better then.

Maybe designer clothes are a problem, but I have a hard time believing you'd have a tough time finding clothes that fit in regular department stores. I'm the same height and 30 lbs heavier (currently on a diet, and losing), and I'm a size 14, which is a bit challenging but still quite doable. At that weight I'd be an 8 or 10.
[ Reply | Options ]Trying not to be mean, but I think you're ridiculous. I'm 5'7"...used to weigh 116 in my mid-20s and while not optimal now I'm 165 (after hitting a peak of 210 w/ my 2nd dc and dieting like crazy). Size 6/8 is readily available -- now finding nice/stylish plus-size clothes is really hard.If you're really distraught about this, then go on a diet and start working out.

When I ride in a taxi cab with my DC I:
- Use a carseat
- Buckle him/her in his/her own seat
- Hold him/her on my lap
- I'd never ride in a taxi with my DC, it's much too dangerous!
