  • I live and work in a city where the cost of living is low. I work at a place (part time) where most of us are paid about $15/hr, which is fine because it is (was) a very easy-going, flexible place to work. We generate content for a website for salespeople. Yesterday we had a meeting and it appears as though everything is changing, we are losing some flexibility, and it sounds like there will be more accountability and more responsibility. Shouldn't we ALL get a wage increase? This is less $ than I've made since 1997 (but I always lived in expensive cities). But $15/hr to actually have to work seems like slave wages.

          • Lets say a city equivalent to Columbus, Oh (in the name of anonymity). I've been here for 1.5 years. It isn't about just me, though, its about everyone. Some people here make $12/hr. This WAS fine because it was so flexible, and if you needed a week or a month off, no-one cared. Come in late? Whatever. Leave early? Who cares! Surf the internet for an hour? Thats fine. Now its rigid and we have to work set hours. We are accountable for the hours we are here, which is fine, I guess, but I'd like to be compensated accordingly, if I'm actually going to have to work instead of UB.

            • NP: I'm trying to understand, but I really don't. You're saying, getting paid $15 an hour was ok because you were surfing the internet, etc., but now that you're actually going to have to work when you say you're working, it's not enough?

                    • What's your rationale? "Well, $15/hr was ok when we were just f*cking around, but if you want me to actually work, I'll need a raise." That's not gonna fly. Best you can do is ask for merit/target based bonuses.

                      • We all got new responsibilities, titles and a different reporting structure. Its not the fucking around, its the flexibility, which was a big part of our compensation. I used to schedule my job around my life, now I have to schedule my life around my job. I am not rescheduling my kids appointments for a crappy $15/hr.
