  • What kind of markers for cancer can you routinely test for? Is it common to do it? My mom, who lives in another country, emailed me today that she did that test just to check. Guess what? Some things came positive. I can't ask her what because of time difference, but I am surprised. I've never heard anybody in the US doing this as a standard checkup (except when you have breast cancer in family or prostate). Does anybody know anything about it? Thanks so much.

    • MD mom here. Those tests are not routinely used for screening or diagnosis. The only things that are useful for the average person screening are the PSA for prostate, colonoscopies for colon, paps, and mammos.

      • My mom elected to do them, just to be sure. Now she knows there's something and they will be looking. Do we all potentially have "something"? Would I find something if I tested myself? Does her positive test mean that she has cancer?
