Boarding School moms? I need some "go look at" recommendations for a solid B+ student. Lawrenceville, St. Andrew's, St. Mark's...any others?

  - thanks. Do you think a B+ student has a shot at Choate? I figured it was on a par with Hotchkiss and St. Pauls?

    - not quite as strong as st pauls. at least historically. it has gotten much more popular, and therefore harder to get in to. i'd say he has at least a shot. worth it for a reach school.

        loomis chafee. its in connecticut. i dont know much about it, but its a smaller, kind of second tier school.

        itd - Loomis is on a par w/St. Paul's. VERY small, not as well known as Hotchkiss, Andover, etc.

        lol! I just looked up stats on St. Paul's and Loomis...Loomis is about 200 students BIGGER than St. Pauls! College accepts at St. Paul's are also much more impressive.

  - it's "hun" (like attila), and though it does have some boarding students, it's more of a day school than a boarding school. decent school, but i wouldn't want my child boarding there ( i used to teach there)

      - yes -- there's almost a stigma. that's too strong a word, but the boarders are sort of set apart in a not-so-good way. however, hun is very doable for a non-A student, and has a great educational support program.

        I think for my ds that mostly or all boarding is the way to go. He gets As in science and history, the rest is B/B+, not a jock, and sort of an introvert...unless he makes good buddies and it really draws him out. Do you have any recs?

        curious why boarding school for this kind of ds? would have thought all the group activity and being "on" 24/7 would be too much.

        actually, he thrived in situations like sleepovers or times when hanging out with a group he's gotten to know. He just takes a while to warm up..so maybe I shouldn't have said introvert, but cautious instead.

        looking at Lawrenceville, but am concerned that it is nearly half day students. I think that really changes things for a student there in a not so good way.

  - STAY AWAY FROM WESTOVER. OMG, I cannot begin to tell you the horrors of freshman "traditions". (staff-sanctioned admissions rituals). Torturing 13 year olds with the approval of administrators and teachers. nice. STAY AWAY. Plus, it's mostly terrorist's kids.

- Concord Academy is very nice, artsy, but I don't know how competitive admissions are, if a B+ would cut it. Caroline Kennedy went there, if you care about that sort of thing;)

  - If you live somewhere where schools suck or can't get in. Sometimes if parents b/c parents get divorced... I went. It was great & am thinking about it for my 3 kids, but can't imagine letting go of my babies at 14

  - I went b/c we moved to an area, right before I started 11th grade, where the local schools were terrible. My dad had gone to Loomis and thought boarding school would be good for my confidence; while I had a lot of problems adjusting, in the end it was a great experience.

I went b/c we moved to an area, right before I started 11th grade, where the local schools were terrible. My dad had gone to Loomis and thought boarding school would be good for my confidence; while I had a lot of problems adjusting, in the end it was a great experience.
