Being an associate in a law firm (any law firm) is designed to make you feel stupid and inadequate. Even if 90% of the partners are nice and easy to work with, there is always that one that constantly makes you feel dumb or expects you to read his mind or isn't interested in an explanation he just wants to yell at you because he can. I am so sick of it. Are other industries like this? Or is the nature of the practice of law that makes the partners such freaking a$$holes. It's like I have to constantly remind myself that I am not a moron and I am an intelligent accomplished attorney.

[ Reply | Options ]NP - I'm a senior associate in a big firm and I would looooooove to get out, but I am not qualified to do anything else. I am litigator, which is a skill that is not transferable outside the profession. Kill me.

because all partners secretly hate their lives, are socially inept and take out their frustrations on the underlings
[ Reply | Options ]law firms are worse b/c of diffuse accountability. the asshole partner really doesn't report to anyone adnif he bringsinbusiness, nobody will tell him to change.
[ Reply | Options ]I am so disgusted by the partner I report to that I am barely even trying to hide the fact I am job hunting.
[ Reply | Options ]I think in big law firms they always assume (or should assume) that everyone is looking for a new job. where are you looking, btw? Any luck yet?
[ Reply | Options ]dont you work for more than one person? there is your problem. Go find the good people to work for. When one person has your career in their hands, well, its not that good for you. signed, biglaw partner mom
[ Reply | Options ]ITTA. you do need that one close relationship but you also have to make sure the other partenrs know you nadyour work
[ Reply | Options ]right, get out from under that troll you are working for. Really, talk to your other associates and see who people like to work for...
[ Reply | Options ]np: it's a small firm. not biglaw. I have diff. issues than most of you; I have a partner who's head of litigation who has really just quit marketing and trying and doesn't work. he's been incredibly lucky and never had to work for clients; now the work has dried up and he's not doing anything abt it. We've all tried marketing but there's no financial support for any of our efforts. he's in the best position to market b/c he's the oldest and most experienced but he won't. he recently cut almost half my time on a plaintiffs case and put all of this money that should have gone into my column into his column. even though I did everything on the case and he did almost nothing. I feel like I'm on a sinking ship.

When I ride in a taxi cab with my DC I:
- Use a carseat
- Buckle him/her in his/her own seat
- Hold him/her on my lap
- I'd never ride in a taxi with my DC, it's much too dangerous!
