  • Being an associate in a law firm (any law firm) is designed to make you feel stupid and inadequate. Even if 90% of the partners are nice and easy to work with, there is always that one that constantly makes you feel dumb or expects you to read his mind or isn't interested in an explanation he just wants to yell at you because he can. I am so sick of it. Are other industries like this? Or is the nature of the practice of law that makes the partners such freaking a$$holes. It's like I have to constantly remind myself that I am not a moron and I am an intelligent accomplished attorney.

    • I can't imagine a law firm where 90% of the partners are nice and easy to work with. I would guess more like 40%. Can you get out and do something else?

      • NP - I'm a senior associate in a big firm and I would looooooove to get out, but I am not qualified to do anything else. I am litigator, which is a skill that is not transferable outside the profession. Kill me.

        • not really, you could easily go in house and manage litigation from the client side. If you needed me to tell you this, no wonder why you aren't succeeding....

          • Easily? Not really. And it's complicated by the fact that I am part time.

            • well easily yes, you are part time and honestly, that is really not a great spot in biglaw, what we do really doesn't translate to "part time" UNfortunately.

        • not true! what about a gov't agency? I was a litigator too - now I have regular hours, part time, not great pay, but not awful. the difference in stress level is extraordinary. GL to you.

            • I am part time. I need to stay part time, so my options are very limited. If I were transactional, I would be in a cushy little part time corporate job right now.

              • I just realized you said that you are part time. Did you start off part time in your current job, or work there first full time? I would love a job like that, but have been looking to no avail.

    • law firms are worse b/c of diffuse accountability. the asshole partner really doesn't report to anyone adnif he bringsinbusiness, nobody will tell him to change.

    • BIGLAW Partner mom here, it really depends on the people you work with. Sounds like you need to move on. Are they trying to weed you out? Maybe you just aren't cut for it.

      • I think in big law firms they always assume (or should assume) that everyone is looking for a new job. where are you looking, btw? Any luck yet?

      • dont you work for more than one person? there is your problem. Go find the good people to work for. When one person has your career in their hands, well, its not that good for you. signed, biglaw partner mom

            • np: it's a small firm. not biglaw. I have diff. issues than most of you; I have a partner who's head of litigation who has really just quit marketing and trying and doesn't work. he's been incredibly lucky and never had to work for clients; now the work has dried up and he's not doing anything abt it. We've all tried marketing but there's no financial support for any of our efforts. he's in the best position to market b/c he's the oldest and most experienced but he won't. he recently cut almost half my time on a plaintiffs case and put all of this money that should have gone into my column into his column. even though I did everything on the case and he did almost nothing. I feel like I'm on a sinking ship.
