  • I told a sort of friend that dd might need a SEIT in class next year. Was this a mistake or nothing to hide?

    • IMO nothing to hide. this is your DD, people have to love her for who she is.

      • the issues are mild and actually shocking to most, so i also want support from friends since it does upset me

        • I'm going to say something as gently as possible, b/c I 'm not trying to upset you. If a child warrants a SEIT the issues aren't *that* mild. You are doing the right thing, and many kids do very very well with early help. You should expect your friends support you and your DD. And I think that talking about these issues is important for everyone .

          • OR below: though I see your point, your child can still be on the mild side of these things and still qualify for a SEIT. My DS has SN but he is rather mild (though definitely not typical)

            • of course. I also have a SN child and while each individual issue appears mild there are enough different issues going on that it can be very impairing.

                • and of course if your child has some fabulous strengths that they use to compensate it really gets confusing. I was , frankly, shocked at how impaired my DC is in the areas where there are deficits.

          • i only say mild in that it may not be an issue, he may not even get services. he prefers to play alone at school most of the time (1/2 days). he is great on playdates and with adults, one of his evaluators was shocked at this rec and asked if they had the right kid.

    • It really depends on how open you want to be. Nothing to be ashamed of certainly, but realistically, some ignorant people will view her differently once they know she has "issues"

        • Ah, well, then she seems like the perfect person to tell since she's BTDT as far as these things are concerned, and she clearly will be supportive

      • and it's a slight social issue. she prefers to play alone most of the time. may just be her personality

        • Really? That's her only issue? I'm assuming you've taken her to a dev. ped. I'm surprised she'd qualify for SEIT hours if this was the only thing going on.

            • no language delays or sensory stuff? Brace yourself - unlikely he'll get approved for a SEIT just based on this alone

              • no, i wanted speech, but he is not delayed. his receptive and expressive lang are at 5.9 (he is 4.1),so it may not happen
