Anyone work for a university not as an instructor or professor? Like an admin or support role? I've been offered a postion and not sure I want it. Looking for pros-cons to this type of work.
6 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Just wondering what the atmosphere is like in general. Family friendly? Do the professors & students treat you with respect? Good hours/benefits?basically I have been offered a position (unsolicited) to work as a department admin assistant in that I would report directly to the head of a dept and support the professor/students within.
[ Reply | Options ]I was treated with respect. Benefits (such as hc and retirement) are generally quite good (even if the salary itself is so-so). Not exactly family friendly. Meager maternity leave (6 weeks for us). Generally relaxed atmosphere to work in though, depending on the dept. Support staff rarely work past 5 pm. I'd take it and give it a try if I were you. If the dept head is an asshole you can quit.
