  • When did your newborn make eye contact? I am freaking out because my 5 week old, never seems to be looking at my face, just sort of over my head. I know it takes a while for sight to develop, but everything I am reading is saying that she should be able to focus within 8-15 inches and that she should be drawn to and fascinated by faces. Someone put me at ease!

    • I will. I was you, in a lather, pleading with dbto look at me. Eventually he did and now will engage in a staring contest with whomever is game. Don't worry!

    • this was exactly me with 5 w/o db. Took her to ped, who told us to give it time but I continued to freak out so she recommended an ophthalmologist. dh knew I was a nut case and wouldn't let me take her. She was late to smile and interact, and to this day s just not the most social person, but totally normal. Give it another 2-3 weeks -she will get interested!!

      • Ditto, totally; felt like it took 3 mos for my db to make sustained eye contact, and now she's 3.5 yo, socially engaging, loving, beginning to read super early, etc... don't worry!

    • don't worry, it will just happen all of a sudden. it's like they wake up and are suddenly aware of so much more. it happened at around 6.5 weeks or so for us.

    • They are all over the place at that age. Honestly. Worry later if he's not making eye contact at 3 months.

    • Thanks everyone! Just one more irrational fear question: How early can you diagnose blindness?

      • omg...please honey, relax. your child is NOT blind... really. From one cuckoo worrier to another, breathe, have a glass of wine and repeat "everything is fine"

        • I know! I'm not even a first time mom! It's hard not to compare kids, but my first was so alert immediately and made eye contact eraly.
