  • Have been told that DOE has not asked schools how many students are leaving, nor have schools asked parents. According to my D3 G&T school, the DOE currently only knows about spots of students who have officially withdrawn from next year's class and the numbers are avialable on an "ATA" website in real time. So if schools do not get info about who is leaving before DOE matches, then high scorers applying for 1st and 2d grades etc will not be able to place into spots the DOE doesn't know exists. What does this mean? Currently at our school, only 1 or 2 confirmed openings for 1st grade. So, those are the open sibline/high score slots. Any extra slots that open over the summer will not be offered to sibs (because DOE has no waitlist) and will then go to new families who take test during summer. This is very unnerving and means high scorers and sibs could be locked out from spaces that exist come Sept!

      • Encourage principal NOW to find out how many open spots will be avail and tell DOE NOW so they can be filled by the applicant match date and not left empty or placed by new arrivals to NYC while high scorers are left SO

    • Interesting, our D2 gen'l gave everyone a form to fill out to say whether or not their DC was re-enrolling next year.

    • They may well not fill those spaces at all, it's not a problem for anyone is the class has 24 kids instead of 26. Happened in our first grade this year.

        • np: I was told there was going to be a WL for the higher grades. In fact for some grades there are no spots now, so they will put kids on WL for if/when spots appear. Not for K obviously but higher grades where any spots are based on attrition.

            • A friend is applying for second grade and was told this. Supposedly they have no clue whether there will be any spots for second grade at this point, though her dc (sibling) made the cutoff. She was told dc will be WL to see if a spot opens up. This is in D3, and I believe Nicky Rosen was the source.

      • Isn't it unfair to high-scorers who qualify for a spot to not open up the class when the regs allow for a bigger class?

        • Teacher's contract actually limits the size in lower grades to 25. Some schools have exceptions but it's not something to aim for.
