me too! how's it working for you? I want to get away from the whole reward/punishment crap.
[ Reply | Options ]Really, really well. I'm not quite where I want to be yet - some days, it's hard to think through a situation creatively - but I'm pretty close. Have 3 kids, and all are very kind, thoughtful little people. What about you?

I teach, explain, model, practice, etc. Becky Bailey's book "Easy To Love, Difficult To Discipline" is great for this. So, for example, if dc pushes som eone who took his toy, I might say, "Did you push your friend because she grabbed your toy? No pushing. Pushing can hurt. If someone grabs your toy, you can say, 'I'm not done with m y turn yet.' If they still don't give it back, you can come get me, and I'll help. Let's try it right now. Hey, you did it! You told her that it's still your turn!" etc. My assumption is that
[ Reply | Options ]yes, i do all that with 3yo too and rarely give time outs and never "punish" BUT when she yells at me or others, or hits etc., I do all the explaining and then put her somewhere to sit for a moment. some things are non negotiable, especially if she keep it up. I really don't agree with time outs, but that is the kind of situation I always feel stuck about
