  • In public schools, are you guaranteed a right to speak to the principal of your dc's school? Our school is throwing up a bunch of roadblocks to getting an appt to meet with her. TIA!

    • That's terrible. Our principal is very accesible and has set up an easy system to set up an appointment. I thought most schools did that!

    • Most principals are insanely busy, but of course you should be able to meet with them.

    • Depends on the school. A lot of schools will have you go through the school counselor or parent coordinator first

    • OP: She is accessible in the schoolyard, but we wanted to sit down and speak with her about dc's class and her performance. We were made to talk to the Parent Coordinator first despite the fact that it was not really anything that she could help us with. We did that, and then the Parent Coordinator told us that we really don't need to meet with the principal. We are still going to, for our own peace of mind, but the front office is still trying to discourage us.

      • If it's a serious issue, I'd push it. Otherwise, I'd try to imagine what life would be like for the principal if every parent wanted a sit down meeting with here just "for peace of mind."

        • I am sympathetic to how busy she is, but this is our 6th year at this school between 2 dcs, and we have never asked to speak to anyone at the school before, so I don't think it's an unreasonable request. Also, we have been gritting our teeth all year about this and the situation has not improved. Not sure that speaking with her will really change anything, but I feel I need to do this to be an advocate for my child.

          • Like I said, if it is serious/very important to you, I'd totally push it. I'd just take a second look to evaluate it is all. Good luck! I hope you get your meeting and it goes well. :)

          • Did you already address the issue with the teacher? For classroom issues you are expected to talk to the teacher first.

            • Of course, I know how to follow the chain of command. She also agreed that I should talk to the principal.

                • OP: Uh uh, you are not going to get it out of me. Besides there are several nuanced issues that i just cannot really explain on a message board. Sorry, ladies, but thanks for letting me vent.

                    • Thanks a lot. Not really pushing, but just wanted to feel that i am being an appropriate advocate for my child. Aren't we all?

                    • Thanks for the vote of confidence, but no, I am one of the mousiest, quietest, laid-back parents, who almost never ever says anything to the teacher. But believe what you want.
