NJ Moms: Looking for a town with good schools, nice town center (shopping, restaurants) and decent commute to NYC. I don't drive so need to be able to walk to local grocery, train/bus station, and schools for DCs - any ideas? Specific areas of said tow

OP: see this is my issue. I can not drive b/c of a medical condition, and we're priced out of Hoboken at this point (where we currently live). Hoboken is the ideal place for me, but I can't afford a 3br, 2ba apt here. I know I could get a beautiful 3 in Westfield, Madison, etc. for the same price, but I can not drive and need to be able to get DCs to school, do shopping, etc.

Chatham/Madison, but imo, you're kidding yourself if you think you'll be able to do NO driving; even w/ a walkable town center, you won't find EVERYTHING that close and when it rains/snows you'll still want a car

I just don't want to be 'stuck' in my house if it is a relatively nice day. We lived in a Central Jersey 'burb for on r and it was MISERABLE! I had no friends, no one EVER went to the park or playground except for me & DD. Lonely. Long Commute for DH. MISERY.
