  • NJ Moms: Looking for a town with good schools, nice town center (shopping, restaurants) and decent commute to NYC. I don't drive so need to be able to walk to local grocery, train/bus station, and schools for DCs - any ideas? Specific areas of said tow

      • OP: see this is my issue. I can not drive b/c of a medical condition, and we're priced out of Hoboken at this point (where we currently live). Hoboken is the ideal place for me, but I can't afford a 3br, 2ba apt here. I know I could get a beautiful 3 in Westfield, Madison, etc. for the same price, but I can not drive and need to be able to get DCs to school, do shopping, etc.

          • i moved here from hoboken also. if you buy close to town you don't really need a car. i lived here for two yrs without one. i can walk to stop and shop and trader joes, school the y, the pool, everywhere. just don't let the realtor take you more than 1 e from town center.

            • Which area of town, or streets should I be mapping, when looking on Trulia or Realtor.com? Just want to see what we can get for our $$ in those specific areas

        • I posted below (I'm in Chatham); that's tough, sorry. I really think you'd be stressed out unless you had only one kid. Getting around w/ 2 is just so much harder; plus what if you don't get into the preschool that's close to home, etc. etc.

    • do not do this to yourself. we ended up buying a house way too big for our needs because I didn't want to drive. within 3 weeks I had a new car. you HAVE to drive in the burbs.

    • Chatham/Madison, but imo, you're kidding yourself if you think you'll be able to do NO driving; even w/ a walkable town center, you won't find EVERYTHING that close and when it rains/snows you'll still want a car

      • OP: I make it work in Hoboken, I still have to walk to get DD to school w/an infant - when it's cold/raining/snowing we call a cab. I just don't want to be 'stuck' in my house if it is a relatively nice day. We lived in a Central Jersey 'burb for on r and it was MISERABLE! I had no friends, no one EVER went to the park or playground except for me & DD. Lonely. Long Commute for DH. MISERY.
