            • because everybody wants to get into the same few preschools. the thinking is that getting into the "right" preschool makes the chances to get into a "good" ongoing (that gurantees a spot at HYP down the road)

              • but doesn't everyone want to get into the same few ongoings? or is it just because nursery is the beginning of thep process. (and thank you for answering)

                • OR: There are 7 schools considered TT (top tier) people are dying to get kids into but most spots go to sibs. There are many great "non-TT" schools people are thrilled to send kids to nowadays. In the past, if you can pay, you can find a spot at any on ing. Now, it's like college admissions.

                  • Just like today, there have been years in the past when it was impossible to get into private school. It has always been cyclical. My mother says that when she applied me, many kids didnot get in anywhere. I got in where I did probably b/c legacy.

                    • I think most people agree that it's become harder especially since 2001 or so. It's increasingly getting harder since private spots didn't automatically go to WASP elites/legs like they used to pass down family china and more competition/meritocracy h become more important.

                      • Yes, but back when many schools were primarily WASP, it was very hard to get into the others that weren't WASP b/c there were only so many spots available at a small handful of schools.

                        • I meant to say, if you were not a WASP, then your other options were very limited.

                        • Also, "most people agree" b/c the people on this board do not include moms who applied their kids in the sixties. I think those moms would pretty much disagree that things were not harder or just as hard then. There have been many periods when hard. N is one of many.

                        • I've read all the articles that came out (I think) on private kinder admissions and consultants, school DOAs, PSDs and others in the know said it's far harder in general.

                • here on UB there is a ranking system for ongoings and of course most try to get a spot at the top tier schools. The anxiety here on UB is much more fierce during the ongoing application process.

              • OR: yup. angst for nursery schools and near panic over ongoings. Hundreds (not sure how many but between 200-300 at least) get shut out (no acceptance anywhere). People apply to 10-14 schools on average but still hard to get a spot.
