The OP who is leaving her 4yo for 4 years to go to school in another country needs to tell us what the F the program is that she can't do it where she is or bring her dd.

- I am not her, but I think her mother can look after the child just fine. She will still see the child regularly and can really better her life with a college education. The child will be 8 yo -- plenty of life with mom.

  - every summer (maybe) and christmas (maybe) is not regularly to a 4-8yo. What if the Grandmother dies suddenly? Not a great plan.

    - OR: She said her mom is 55 -- that is still young. Obviously, OP would have to change her plans if her mom died. However, the GRANDMOTHER will be caring for the child. I have a 5 yo and an 8 yo, and if I had to do this to my 5 yo, she'd be fine.

    - np: My IL's divorced and the father went to live in Hong Kong for 8 years -- the kids spent 1 month each summer with him plus 3 holidays. They are still close.

    - She isn't leaving home to earn money, so they can survive, she is leaving home to go to school, so they can live better. There is a difference between that OP and a Nanny. Though, I want to understand OP better, I wish she would give more details.

  - And she will face deep repercussions for this even though she is doing it for her family (m) I've seen it first hand. When these families get back together it is often a very rough transition and some of those bonds are never mended. Very very sad.
