  • Poor ds has seasonal allergies. Last year we tried Claritan, it didn't seem to help. Now he is on Zyrtec. He is still pretty sniffly, and his eyes bother him. By late afternoon his eyes are puffy and he looks miserable. Is there another option for h m? I don't know if the Zyrtec is not working, or if I'm expecting too much (like a cure). We give it to him at night, is it possible he's worse late in the day because it's wearing off? Should we switch to am? Ideas?

      • I don't know anything about those, He has an allergist (for food allergies). Should I make an appt with the allergist, or regular ped first?

        • I'm really not an expert, I just know someone whom they helped very much, but it's a long process. He got the shots at an allergist.

        • yes, allergist administers these. Initially once per week (for like a year), then once a month. Said to work wonders to basically cure them as he gets older.

    • all I can tell you is that my eyes are puffy and miserable when I'm taking allergy medicine, but it's not as bad as when I'm NOT taking anything.

    • Just spoke to my ped today about this. My DS is 2.4 was on Claritan for 3 days, it was useless. Ped said give him 12 hour Zyrtec and then Benadryl at night. This worked well for us, however, she told me to try for 3 days and if no results there were othe r options, so, I think you should call ped.

      • TY. I haven't heard of much else, so I didn't want to waste the time going to the dr if this was the best we could get.

      • aack! I'd probably have to tie him up to keep him inside! I think maybe we should go to the allergist, I didn't know I could possibly double up with Benedryl.

        • Im the poster above, re: clarinex. Seriously go to an allergist, I found my ped didnt know much about allergies and ds didnt get relief until we saw the allergist. There is so much they can do. My son is allergic to grass, weeds and trees- awful for an active boy. But his meds help tremnedously and he never has to stay indoors.
