  • 2.8 yr old isn't potty trained yet, and for some reason, 10 minutes after she goes in for her nap, poops in her diaper and needs to be changed. it's been happening like clockwork for the past few weeks. any ideas on what's going on and what i should do

    • honestly, you should toilet train her, especially with an easily predictable bowel movement like that.

      • we're trying, but she's a bit traumatized by the whole thing, so we're not pushing it too hard.

    • Is she pooping herself awake? Or is she awake when she poops?

        • Hmm, sounds like she's ready for training. Have you tried positive reinforcement? e.g., Stickers/prizes for using the potty?

          • oh yeah. we've even tried chocolate and ice cream. it's a no go. she's incredibly worried about it, it's almost like someone told her NOT to use the potty, and like she's doing a good thing if she pees and poops in her diaper.

            • That's tough. Maybe lay off for a month, give her a chance to calm down.

            • My DS was REALLY opposed to using the potty, particularly for pooping...we had to wait longer, use lots of incentives, and put up with a lot of screaming bloody murder. We also put the potty in front of the TV (which we don't normally let him watch) and gave him a big cup of water, but he would hold it in for loooooong periods of time and wait it out.

              • Potty trained for pee by 3.6, and didn't need diapers because he never would poop outside of the house. But not poop trained until 4 yo, slow and arduous process

                • ^^^ He clearly was more in control of bowel/bladder than most grownups, but it was all about control/fear

    • My DS did this consistently for over a year - liked to poop in the privacy of his own room, always held it in until naptime or bedtime.
