  • Two nanny questions: if nanny routinely arrives 10-15 minutes early in the AM, do you pay extra (she is not asked to)? If so, how much? Also, at what time do you pay for cab home?

      • Can I ask where your nanny lives? Ours lives in Flatbush and says she needs a cab home at 7 because it takes her 1.5 hours to get home (UWS) and it's not safe there at 8:30. Thoughts?

        • she lives in Brooklyn, but likes her neighborhood. If she told me it wasn't safe at 8:30 I might question that.

        • Get a new nanny. She needs to move if she's not safe there.

          • That's what I was wondering, but since I don't do the commute, it;s hard for me to say.

            • live on the uws. our first nanny lived in brooklyn near kings county hospital. it took her under an hour to make the commute. but that area is dangerous after dark.

              • so in that instance, what would you do? what time would you send her home in a cab?

                • i would pay for a cab whenever she stayed later than her usual time. i.e. if she usually left at 6, i'd pay for a cab if she stayed until 6:30 or later. and i'd pay for a cab and send her home early on halloween or other days when the neighborhood is really bad. but otherwise, she'd take the train/bus.

                  • i can't think of a single job where employers pay cabfare based on where their employees lived vs. based on the time of night. and we would not have been able to afford it either.

              • Not so much anymore - but it would depend how long a walk from the subway and where too. Our nanny lives in crown heights and we give her cab fare after 8, sometimes earlier in the winter. She says the subway is faster at 7:30

          • are you kidding? From the UWS to Flatbush? Of course its an hour and a half - at least that I'd say.

        • Flatbush is underserved by MTA, and is unsafe in parts. she probably has to wait for buses to get home

        • I would question whether she is just pocketing the $ and taking public transport at that hour. I know friends that send nanny home in car service so they can avoid the cash issue.

          • my nanny did this. somehow her pay-per-ride metrocard would run out at the same intervals whether we'd paid for cabs that week or not

    • I wouldn't pay any extra, but I would show my appreciation in other ways - if I ever come home early I would let her go home right away or other kinds of flexibility like that. I would pay for a cab home after 8 I guess.

    • Don't pay extra but I would pay cab fare after dark, especially if she lives in a shady neighborhood.
