do you think its tacky to ask for money in advance, for a bday dinner?

yeah, i thought so too. friend's girlfriend is hosting a surprise bday dinner. she just emailed everyone, asking them to send her 40 bucks per person, so we don't have to worry about the check
[ Reply | Options ]we used to do this in our 20's, just a small group of girlfriends, everythime a bday came up. we've outgrown it though.
[ Reply | Options ]well, like i said. our friend's girlfriend is maybe 22 (we are all in our mid 30s) .so she probably doesn't know better

I still do this w/ a small group of girlfriends, but that's different than someone sending out invitations and then telling the invitees that they're going to have to pick up the tab.

I think it's tacky to invite people to a dinner and then expect them to pay for it, period.
