  • My dh and I would wait tables, temp, babysit - do anything and everything to avoid dipping into our savings and putting ourselves in dangerous financial waters. I don't get "he's 40 and he wouldn't do that"....I just don't get it.

      • We don't have that much of savings and maybe that's why I'd be so quick to jump into hourly jobs.

        • I missed the earlier post--this is about working at anything after a job loss? If so, I totally agree with you!

          • About some dh w/ a PhD who was in finance who lost his job and now his family cannot afford daily expenses. An honest day's work is an honest day's work. My brother was laid off and he caddied the entire summer. He wason the course at at 7am and done by 2pm. He did interviews in the afternoon. Kept his family afloat. Some people at the country club laughed and him but I think many admired him.

    • ita, but there are a shocking number of people who won't do anything. Temp makes the most sense, because you at least are on anoffice schedule and people, once they know your abilities, will suggest/refer.

    • ita - I'm thinking they live a certain lifestyle and would never stoop to work a bluecollar job even if it meant keeping them out of bankruptcy. Some people just won't do it

    • I had a df who was unemployed for almost a year and she was totally broke, living on her credit cards etc. I suggested she get a job in retail and she was outraged. I thought it was a good idea b/c she'd make money and also have a discount.

      • People like that frustrate me. Maybe because I lack a sense of entitlement. But I would do whatever it takes (within reason) to stay out of debt/preserve our savings.

        • or: It was so frustrating to listen to her cry about money and the stress etc. She didn't like who she would be if she had a job like that.
