  • daycare moms: I need words of encouragement. ds started on Monday and was fine, yesterday they said he was sad (he also cried when I left). This morning he wouldn't let me a foot away from him while we were there and when I picked him up he just laid his head down on my shoulder and stayed there (he never cuddles like that unless it's nighttime). Is this not the right place for him or do I need to give it more time? I'm in tears and I hate it.

    • give it time. Starting at a new place, however wonderful it will end up being, is so hard

    • give it more time-- the first day they don't know what to expect. yesterday and today he knew you'd be gone all day. but give it 2 weeks-- they adjust fast.

      • ^ keep reminding him you always come back-- soon that knowledge will be second nature to him but right now he needs reassurance.

      • I do like it. The teachers are attentive, and they grab the crying kids right away and tell them it's ok (they all cry when the moms leave for the most part). It seems like a good daycare but how can you really tell, you know? This is my first experience with one

    • wait 2 weeks, and talk to the director/teachers daily. My DD cried everyday for two weeks, then loved it.

    • Can you stay a while at the place to help him adjust--even 10 minutes would help.

      • OP: I stay 15-30 min most mornings, I engage the other children, play with him, try to make him comfortable before I leave. Today I almost cried there and I think he could feel my stress when I was holding him. I try to just smile and wave and tell him I love him, but it's getting to me.

    • it will take some adjustment. separation is a process and he needs to form attachments to his new teachers. I would only worry if things are still like this in few months. in the meantime, hang in there! it's tough, but all for a good reason. signed, teacher mom!

      • whoah....not to be obnoxious, but if it took 6-7 months, I might start looking into other daycares. but that might just be your child and it might be a lovely place

        • it's just him, he was 3.5 when he started there and he was very very attached to his sitter and not used to that environment, he's fine now
