  • I am Catholic and will never convert as the traditions are important to me. Yet, I believe priests should marry, women should be allowed to be priests, and that homosexuals have a right to live as they choose as we are all created in God's vision. Does this make me someone who isn't Catholic? I love the church but not all of its teachings.

      • OP: it gets worse. I also do not believe that the Pope is God's messenger on earth and that he is infallible

          • NP: there is an interesting history to the Pope is infallible belief. First: this never meant he is never wrong. When he does the Jumble in the Sunday paper he might make a mistake. It means when he says, "This is what God says..." BUT in the old days the pope had to get the College of Cardinals to validate those edicts. In the not to distant past, one of the popes said he did not need the CofC's approval. Many Catholics say that only those edicts with CofC approval are infallible.

            • interesting. also speaks to the change that CAN occur in the church ... the church is made up of human beings, each with their own motivations and varrying degree of power.

      • Historically, priests/apostles in the early church were married and women were priests - I would agrue that Church should go back to their roots

    • A priest once said that by practicing the rituals and believing in the doctrines' is what makes you a Catholic. If you don't follow these than you aren't Catholic. I agree with him

      • Of course: Technically speaking, you HAVE to believe the teachings of the church to be a member in good standing.

      • I'm a practicing Catholic and I'm not sure I agree. If she was claiming she were a priest - then she would not be Catholic, but wanting change and working towards is does not make one not Catholic.

      • a catholic nun (mother superior) told us once you don't need to be at church in order to speak and visit god. Smart lady. I don't attend church every Sunday and don't feel like I need to do so. I have my faith and practice how is better for me

    • many catholics have a hard time with its teachings and politics, which is why so many are non-practicing. I can't bring myself to attend church because of these reasons and many more.

    • A priest at our church once talked about staying the church and praying for change - that's what he does. He was referring to teaching against homosexuality. I think that is a good way to look at it.

      • ITTTA agree with this. The Church will never change unless there are Catholics in the Church that are working towards it. But it is SLOOOOOOOOWWWWWW.

        • Right, you have to look at it as a 2000 year old institution and the pace is glacial. Won't change much in my lifetime. In the meantime, I go to a liberal church and am in denial about the rest of it.

    • What about the problem with pedophiles being moved around and not prosecuted, what about all the money brought into the church but not given back to the communities? What about priests living lifestyles far above what they should and nuns taking vows of poverty?
