Am I really naiive? I just read that most low income women are not permitted an epidural due to costs? Apparently low-income health care doesn't cover it? Is this true? I feel so dumb for not knowing this.

- also women who give birth (low income or not) in more rural areas often don't have this option, either (anesthesiologists aren't always available to do them).

  - for some reason, i find that less horrifying ... its one thing to not have them be available. its another to have them in the hospital and withhold them from women based on income.

- scandal in CA a few years ago because a hospital was charging Medi-cal patients several hundred dollars for epidurals- if they didn't have the cash, no epidural. Evidently this was illegal under the hospital's contract with the state (in addition to bei dubious ethically)
