We used one of those toddler alarm clocks that light up when it's time to get out of bed. It took a few days for our son to get the hang of it, but it worked for us. [ Reply | More ]

Why no nap? Nanny here. Last Friday I was tired and let my charge sleep three hours at nap. I'm supposed to wake him after two hours. The next Monday the parents said "we don't know what happened, but he slept in until 8 am on Saturday!" He usually Waks by 5. Have you tried even a one hour nap and a slightly later bedtime? An earlier bed time? We have a toy owl that turns green at 6am. If He wakes up before six he can check the owl and see it is orange and he knows he has to go back to bed or play quietly until owl is green and mom comes. [ Reply | More ]

He needs more sleep. Put him to bed earlier, put him down for a nap same time every day consistently, he will eventually nap if you stick with it. Get him an OK to wake clock so he knows it's not time to get up. Treat 4:30 as you would an overnight wake up. [ Reply | More ]

He needs more sleep. When they are over tired they wake up super early. Put him to bed earlier or get him to nap. My 3 yo goes to bed between 6.30-7 and wakes at 7. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Tip from nanny to employers: when you ask us to travel with you or do 24/hr coverage while you're away, please tell us how you intend to pay. It makes a big difference to whether or not we want to do it and it helps us prepare financially. The value we put on our time vs the value you put on our time is usually quite different. 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm not traveling. I'm on lockdown in a NYC apartment and when I am here I have to eat weird food. I lose the freedom to eat what I want for dinner. It's not really a perk and should be compensated. My last "travel" was to a hotel in a not so great city and we weren't allowed to leave the hotel. [ Reply | More ]

It's all negotiable. But tell me what you're thinking. I am working 72 hours consecutive this week with a child who doesn't sleep and I don't know how I will be compensated. They might give me a measely $50/day or they could pay for OT rate of $30/hr for the extra six waking hours per day. The law for overnights is a little tricky, but if the child sleeps, they technically don't have to pay for it. [ Reply | More ]

At our Westchester public, GC says transcript determines college list, test scores and ECS strengthen application. I know that DC has better college choices coming out of public than he would have at private he turned down, or at Stuy. And the education would have been better at private or Stuy. But the education is good at our public and the music program is much better than private and that was important to him. He's had incredible opportunities. Happy with our choice and the very short commute and local friends. Good luck to your Dd! [ Reply | More ]

You should all know when in the school the kids aren't nearly as concerned with color as all of you are. My dad is white, umc. This. If you pay me $30/hour noon to 6pm, your house will be spotless, your laundry will be done, your kids' homework will be started (and maybe finished) and dinner will be on the table. [ Reply | More ]

I was thinking $30 for 4-6. That would be worthwhile for a grad student. If you have some food prep or errands pay $20 for 3-6. Basically she needs to walk away with $60 a day to make it worthwhile. [ Reply | More ]

Can't your kids do one or two days of after school care ? Then you'd only need a sitter a few days a wk. You do realize that most parents figure this out? Part of being a parent is problem solving, esp in a crisis. Woman up. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Dumb question. When you're cleaning the bathroom, how to keep from spreading the toilet germs all over the bathroom as you scrub everything down? Use paper towels for the toilet? Yes I'm this clueless. 14 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Unless you or your family members are crawling with infectious disease, you don't need hospital level standards. Just don't clean the rest of your bathroom with the toilet brush and keep a separate scrub sponge for the toilet and the rest of the bathroom. Don't loose sleep over it. [ Reply | More ]

If you're using a cleaning product that kills germs, it kills the germs as you clean, so you aren't spreading germs to the next surface. [ Reply | More ]

If she provided great care over the course of the 5 years, you can give her a few weeks. Never know when you may need a bailout from her. [ Reply | More ]

I would never worry about needing a bailout from a nanny. I had one nanny for 3 years and another for 5 and if anything they needed something from me not vice versa. However if OP liked this nanny and kept her for 5 years it would be appropriate to help her transition to another ft position and give her whatever $$ OP feels good about [ Reply | More ]
