[ - ] Just venting as I can't tell anyone in IRL. ExDH - who sees DCs maybe one weekend a month and the occasional dinner - has zero problem being regularly critical of my parenting. If something doesn't go perfectly for DCs (who are straight A students, do well in sports, are kind people, etc.) he always suggests it is time for him to step in and impart his wisdom and do things right. This from the guy who can't hold down a job, had so many issues with anger and selfishness that his own DCs were not comfortable living at his house in a shared custody arrangement, hasn't paid a dime for anything of theirs in months, and doesn't even talk to them most weeks. I know I should just ignore (which I do), but man does it get under my skin. 5 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Stop having conversations with him. Arrange custody hand-offs in public places where you just drive off as soon as he pulls up. Do not answer his calls or texts; reply once that he should email you, and then never respond to a call or text again except for genuine emergencies. [ Reply | More ]

I basically do this and it has helped. I guess I am saying that his texts and emails (only occasional calls as I think he knows I won't engage too much) still get under my skin. We also renegotiated custody recently and I had to talk with him in that context as well. [ Reply | More ]

For Paris, I got to the hotel and dumped bags and then just ran all over the city trying to stay up as late as possible. It's kind of crazy, but helps you adjust. Don't take a nap. You'll never wake up. [ Reply | More ]

No, you won't be jetlagged. Set yourself up to be comfortable on the plane (neck pillow, earplugs, window seat) and sleep for as much of the flight as you can. Then have some caffeine in the morning, and just forget you're in another time zone. You'll just feel like any other day when you didn't get quite enough sleep. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 08.04.15, 01:40 PM Flag

For me, both. General rule is it takes one hour per time zone travelled to FULLY adjustg, but the first few days are the hardest. Very important ways to get over it: sun and exercise. Even though you want to sleep in the afternoon that first day, drag your ass outside, even if you are stumbling around not noticing anything. Your body takes its cues from the sun. Definitely try to sleep on the plane as much as you can (earplugs, eye shade, ignore the movie selections, ambien if you can). I also take the homeopathic "No Jetlag" stuff and think it helps. I used to live in London and did this dozens of times. As soon as the plane takes off, take two sleeping pills, put the eyeshade over your eyes, and recline as far as you can. If you go right to sleep and get at least 3-4 hours of sleep, your body will adjust ok. Then, make sure you get to at least 8 pm London time before sleeping again. [ Reply | More ]

It was delayed, but I ended up getting into a good graduate school and making it career wise. I ran on five hours of sleep for most of my life, pretty much. [ Reply | More ]

So your parents were abusive, not there, what? She probably doesn't want to feel beholden to you. I realize that's a big sacrifice but that's also pretty extreme on your part. [ Reply | More ]

My parents made me choose my little sister as maid of honor. It would have been a family uproar if I didn't. I doubt my sister would choose me. And my parents would make something up as of why she wouldn't. [ Reply | More ]

My mom is a younger sister, and says that the parental role her eldest sister took on prevented them from later having a friendship of equals. It may be that your sacrifice (and potential related resentment and entitlement) weigh heavily on her, too. [ Reply | More ]

Do you maintain an attitude that she is forever beholden to you for sacrifices she never asked you to make? Sounds like she is choosing a path that will enable her to take credit for her own accomplishments. [ Reply | More ]

Do NOT let one evening of one day of your entire lives be loaded with such symbolism. A wedding is just a party, and she just isn't thinking about all these decisions and is feeling chummy with her bff, and so asked her. It's not a rejection of you. You and she are still family, and that will never change. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Do SAHMS get upset when other SAHMs go back to work after a long period out of work? My block has a bunch (seriously, like 12) career SAHMs who go with the "I'd love to go back to work, but I just can't find a job!" explanation. I just learned that one of them went back to her old career after 8 years out of work. Do you think the rest of them will be pissed at her for showing that you can actually go back to work if you want to? 28 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I don't know but here is my anecdote: a mom in my school is 50 and has two sons - 7 and 9. Someone asked her is she plans to go back to work, and she hissed "and send my kids to aftercare until 6? No way I would do that!" Another mom went all aggressive on me when I asked her how her new job was (former IB, then divorced SAHM now needs to work as a secretary, which I didn't know). She went on and on how she would never work a finance job and come back at 8pm ever day and miss her children's life just for the money. She knows I work these hours - and I am the sole breadwinner at the moment and have no option. These are the SAHMs in my part of the country.... [ Reply | More ]

I am sorry that they hurt your feelings. I think the net of both of these conversations that whether you work or stay at home or go back to a lesser job, it is a loaded conversation and involves compromise of some sort. [ Reply | More ]

I don't know many catty women. If someone reveals themselves to be catty I don't spend time with them. But the catty people are generally very insecure. I am a down to earth person and they get no payoff being catty to me [ Reply | More ]

+1 she may very well have thought you asked the question precisely because you are still in finance and she is a secretary (ie, that you were the catty one) and so responded defensively. [ Reply | More ]

I didn't know. The only reason I knew was that my DD told me that her daughter is now in after care because her mom works. I was surprised because she had planned on getting alimony and never work again. I am not that familiar with her life though. [ Reply | More ]

Now you're the defensive one because I said you were mostly up to speed on the gossip. She has every reson to assume that you knew what her job was given that you knew she had one at all. I am surmising from the circumstances you give what the reasons could be. After your response, I think I'm spot on. You had to know that the fact that she had to go back at work because of divorce would be a sensitive subject in the first place. You chose to go there anyway. That you got so nasty so quickly with me says something about you, not me. [ Reply | More ]

Actually, I was SO insecure about getting back out there (on a consulting basis) after staying at home until youngest was in K. Then I saw two moms successfully relaunch careers after several years out of the workforce, and it totally gave me the courage to make a move. Now my consulting business is doing quite well, and I partly credit the example of these other SAHMs for motivating me. [ Reply | More ]
