[ - ] WWYD? My DH was just offered a new job opportunity but it involves a lot of travel. He will be away M-Th or M-F 3 weeks a month on average but can WAH or locally the remaining time. He currently commutes to the city and gets home around 9-10pm most nights now so its not like we eat dinner together or he helps with the kids. New job pays a little more but not enough to really drive our decision. DH thinks he would get more time with the kids with the new job and I feel like that might actually be the case. Which would you pick? Will I really feel the difference? 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

My DH travels a lot. Big difference between home every night for you to talk to and know he is there and genuinely out of the house. You will feel even more on your own if he is gone 3 weeks a month. Just my 2 cents. [ Reply | More ]

This is us! DH started new job in January with 50% travel, and local/home base the other times. His previous job also had long hours, but less travel. I have to say that the travel is worse for us -- because the entirety of drop-off for schools (two different locations), having to be home at 7 to relieve the nanny (never able to work late) and sometimes weekends (don't think that there won't be some weekend trips). But, depending on your school/work situation it may not make a difference. For me, all of the domestic duties are on my shoulders with no reprieve (not comparing myself to a single mom, but it's much more difficult than even when he was working late nights). Some prep means reading about opposites, putting things in order, calling stuff sphere rather than round. Then go over the published questions a few times so she is familiar with it. Beyond that is really prepping - buying workbooks, paying people etc. We did some prep, not really prepping. 99 one year 95 the next. [ Reply | More ]

Yes- we prepped (did a test company workbook over about 2 weeks). Child got a 99 (that year when over a thousand kids got a 99). He got into a district G&T. Was it worth it? I don't know. In some ways he might have been happier at his zoned school (walking distance, more neighborhood playdates, less homework/intense academics at such a young age). But no way to tell, since i have not other kids at the zoned school. But yes- if you really want a G&T, you could definitely do a workbook. [ Reply | More ]

In college I had one professor who would spend half of the class summarizing and bullet pointing the readings from the night before. It annoyed me that we wasted time regurgitating what we had just read rather than expanding upon it and delving deeper into it, so I simply stopped doing the readings since I knew he was going to tell us exactly what he wanted us to know anyway. When I had him another semester, I didn't do a single reading. I participated in discussions in class and wrote papers solely based on my thoughts on his notes. I got a A. [ Reply | More ]

If you use it like a 23 year old former frat boy turned IB analyst (holes punched in walls/doors, cabinets broken off hinges, unclean when you move out, etc), it will cost you. Get things fixed as they break, have maintenance replace them if it's covered by your lease, repaint your walls white if you've painted them a different color, and it shouldn't be a problem. I've done this. She just repeats all the information you already know. Not that it's her fault. What else can anyone tell you? You would need someone who knew the schools really well and also knew your child well. [ Reply | More ]

IDK our preschool director was vehemently anti-G&T - she thinks it's racist. Whether or not you agree, it wasn't exactly an objective opinion. [ Reply | More ]

I would not go to UWSA - too rigid and competitive. I don't think there is a huge difference between 199 and 166 GT. 199 more diverse, less of a racist spectacle. 166 GT higher level peer group. But not wildly different from one another. If your child is really bright, it might take her a little longer to get bored at 166 GT. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Uh oh -- one of the SA PR people just blew it with a post. They always make little mistakes that show they are fake. How desperate is Success Academy this year? I bet that NY Times article really hurt them with the UMC parents they are desperate to get. 44 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

The fake person asked if anyone had turned down a g&t program for UWSA, like they planned to do because they were just so impressed with the school. The fake answer was: "We did for older dc, who is happy there, and will be sending younger sib this year. Both scored 99." But here is the lie -- she claims she loves the school for her "99" scoring dc who is older. But then why would she not just put the 2nd child into SA since that child is guaranteed a spot and she just loves it so much? She wouldn't even bother with a g&t test at all! Unless she actually doesn't like SA and wanted her 2nd dc to go to a g&t program. [ Reply | More ]

NP: Many people take the (free!) test just to benchmark their kids. I know at least 5 people who did this this year (several already set on privates, and a couple in older grades to see where they stood. [ Reply | More ]

Sorry, but people may say that, but they also try for citywides or other g&t schools. They aren't "just benchmarking". I hear that from private school parents whose kids take the SHSAT, too, but when they get into Stuy, they almost always go (but most don't). [ Reply | More ]

Most likely it is fake all around. They are desperate to convince upper middle class college-educated parents to send their kids because their teachers have such a hard time teaching the at-risk kids. The only people who fall for that are very insecure parents who need to be told over and over again that their dc is very special. Parents who went to good colleges don't fall for that (most of whom went to public schools themselves). [ Reply | More ]

OP: Why would someone who claims to love UWSA for their "99-scoring dc" and is so happy to have her 2nd dc going there even have her dc take the g&t test? Because she wasn't sure if her dc was really gifted and it was so important for her to know that so that the UWSA administrators could take special care with her highly gifted 2nd child? lolol! Oops -- talk about fake. [ Reply | More ]

The truncated version of her tale is that she just didn't feel that it was a great environment for true learning versus drilling. She also talked about a chart of some sort that ranks the kids according to how well they're doing and that all the kids could see the chart and it made some of them very upset. I wouldn't like that, either--developmentally, children are so all-over-the-place before they're about 9. [ Reply | More ]

OP: Someone posted that she loved UWSA for her older dc, who had scored a 99. And she's sending her 2nd dc who ALSO scored a 99. But why would she even have her dc take the exam if she loved SA, since her dc was guaranteed a spot there? If she really wanted to send her dc there, she would not have bothered to test her for a gifted program! Obviously, she wanted to get her into a g&t school instead and she didn't get in, or the whole post is fake because SA is desperate to convince affluent parents that their gifted kids will get special treatment if they come.
