we upgraded to a college educated nanny who picks them up from school starting around this time. the routine is they come home, empty bags and do homework at dining room table. they must check and ask her to check. they can ask her for help if they are stuck. when i get home we review it together and pack it away for the next morning. We usually do it after dinner, since we don't get home until 6. Sometimes 9yo dd will get started while I'm making dinner. 11yo ds tries to put it off as late as possible, and sometimes "forgets" to tell me about parts of it, so has to do it in the AM before school. But I prefer to get it done right after we eat. Extra work...not a lot other than reading, although dd likes a site from the school called XtraMath. GL! [ Reply | More ]

General Topics 10.30.14, 06:56 PM Flag

I'd say it depends on why you're switching (or trying to) and also the specific private schools involved. Be diplomatic and honest about it with your current school, try to give some vague reasons which are not one speck insulting to them (schools locations, specific offerings of other school, sibling? etc). Despite all the hub-bub always on here I personally know of some private school grades which are under-enrolled. They wouldn't turn away a child/family in good standing simply because you tried applying elsewhere. [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 10.30.14, 06:54 PM Flag

You might have a timing issue when it comes to contract/deposit. Most privates ask current families to sign/pay prior to making acceptance offers. So you might be in a weird spot of not yet knowing if you got into new school when contract/deposit for old school is due. That could be a reason old school uses to release your spot. we did this- but we were very honest and open about it with school- they did not "hold" a seat for us- after applying elsewhere and getting other acceptances we decided to stay on-(once you see others- you'll realize they are all pretty much the same)- we had to "reapply" to original school for technicality- and we stayed on- one other family in DC class did the same- i think the key is being honest with school- you'll need a letter from prior school when applying to new one- so no way to hide it anyway- Hope that helps- good luck! If you posted something about cheating on Babycenter where there is a lower HHI crowd all women tell you to leave and stick up for yourself. ONLY in wealthy circles does anyone say to ignore things and then act like they are doing it out of maturity. It very well may be the right decision (I mean you are left with two options that suck anyway) but you only see this turn the other cheek mentality among women married to $$$ husbands. Not saying anyone is gold digging, but if you ask the same question about a man that isn't bringing in money NO ONE says to just ignore it. 17 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

They certainly do. Those without money can't afford two households. Also, people with money tend to have higher IQ on average and realize that reactionary responses like leaving a cheating spouse in order to "protect your dignity" or "teach him a lesson" doesn't make like better for the kids. Ten they get a step mom who they may or may not like and their dad may or may not have more kids and then less time and resources for the current kids. It's simple economics. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] More furniture - I need a new dining table. One one table in small apartment, we will eat all meals there, use for art projects, it will be homework central. What surface do you suggest and where to buy. We live in NYC. I constatnly watch craigslist, but have not found what I want. Ideally would expand for hosting family events. Now we have a very old cheap glass top table. Love the idea that I don't worry about the top, but always looks filthy. Kids are tweens. 9 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Check out resource furniture. There is one that can be expended to various different sizes and be as small as a console table. [ Reply | More ]

Hate to have to say it, but Ikea. Years ago, we bought a solid wood table from Ikea (put it together ourselves). That thing has been a workhorse. Dressed it up with finish/paint. [ Reply | More ]

Crate & Barrel. They have a less expensive line that's actually quite decent--works for our family of (somewhat) clumsy people including teen. [ Reply | More ]
