A generation age the elderly did not need hired help since their children were more likely to stay near their parents in their hometown, the daughters had more time as they were SAHMs, there were more children to help, the children were not still paying massive educational debt and so many people were not living for years into their 90's unable to care for themselves. Also, people started having families younger so you did not have babies and elderly parents at the same time. Anyone notice this? 18 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

Yes and no. Poor and middle class people need to understand that they cannot afford the same lifestyle as the wealthy. I think the more interesting question is how we got here. College is more expensive and employer-funded retirement has long gone by the wayside. You would think by now that: a) parents would tell DC they get X amount for college and if DC insists on studying English at a private university they can damn well borrow the rest; and b) people would have gotten real about living within their means and saving for retirement. Expecting parents to fund college with no limitations and that social security is the go-to retirement plan is totally unrealistic. [ Reply | More ]
