[ - ] DD wants to start babysitting. She's 14. I suggested we start with our building only. A dad in the building contacted her and asked her to babysit 7p - 1:30am. I told her she was not allowed to stay there past 11:30 and that she had to tell the family this was her curfew. What do you think? Should I have offered to switch and sit until they got home. When I was 14 and babysitting the parents would come home that late every Saturday night. I would be asleep on the couch and they'd wake me up and drive me home. But the "rules" seem different today. [ - ] I was on Spence website and lower school section details an example of teaching 2nd graders political activism. That's exactly the kind of thing I'd like to avoid. Are there any TT schools (girls or coed) that focus on academics and developing a wholesome person through arts, arts history, geography etc but leave social and political matters outside of the curriculum? That's not a lot to ask, is it? 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

They are all going to do it. It helps the girls understand the lesson. In the Spence case it is civil rights. They put what they are studying into practice. [ Reply | More ]

So when people say that one school is more traditional than others. What would that mean, if not this? [ Reply | More ]

The girls schools are more traditional. That example isn't exactly non traditional. It is just taking what they are learning and applying it. Overall the school is traditional as are most of the girls schools. In the lower school, they all tend to be more progressive because that is how the kids learn best. Then they ramp up and get more and more traditional as they move up. [ Reply | More ]

Yes, yes, it makes sense. But there's so much to learn about the world: world history (England, France, you name it), geography, Greek and Roman mythology, art history, foreign languages. Why in the world they would invest the precious time of the curriculum into THIS? And put together mock protests? It just says a lot about the school philosophy. Maybe it's just an unfortunate one off example on their part? Although I doubt it. Because see what some other poster wrote about the high school protest below [ Reply | More ]

Like Spanish, basic coding and engineering, dance, science, art and even social studies. All of which are subjects at Spence the girls take in the lower school. Yes they learn by doing, but it works and the girls come away knowing what they are learning about. [ Reply | More ]

Omg. Yes, that too. Ideally I would love none of the social nonsense. You can tell kids: ok, this is right and this is wrong. But to let them put together a protest song (what, are they OWS in the making)? Or to talk about priviledge? It is the parents job I think. Parents can deliver the message that works for their family best. [ Reply | More ]
