[ - ] Do you let your kids argue their way out of rules and routines sometimes? Not that I let them argue in a mean or angry way, but I do let my kids break the rules (within reason, of course) if they can make a good case to me for why they should be allowed to. Anyone else? I feel like most people here on this site are more worried about proving that they're "in charge" and honestly I couldn't care less about proving my authority over my kid. 3 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I'm glad you posted this, because I have had this on my mind since the post about the parent who locked her child out of the apartment, and the one yesterday about "back talk." [ Reply | More ]

NP: In terms of "backtalk" from my teenage DS, I am of the mind that once I communicate to him how this is not appropriate, a segue to helping him identify the trigger for the anger/frustration is the best way to help him in the long run. I agree with OP that people on UP tend to focus on the power trippy aspect of teen backtalk and not on helping the teen understand and manage his moods. [ Reply | More ]

YW, everything is going to be okay. Write it on a post-it note and look at it every day. You will get through this. My dad was unemployed many times during my childhood (my mom is a social worker for the state, so not exactly a high HHI) and we got through it. You should be examining your budget now and trimming back where you can. DH should start working on resume, reaching out to contacts, etc. The more proactive you all are now, the easier the blow will be when/if it comes. [ Reply | More ]

[ - ] Posted here a while back about new neighbors who moved in next door with a dog that is barking non stop whenever they are not home. I left a polite note for the owners explaining the issue. I also contacted the management company and their response was - please let us know not the owner and this is pet friendly building. Whenever I call the management office I get a voice mail and it takes them 24-48 hrs to respond if they do at all, so obviously they will never be able to witness the issue themselves. Hate dog owners :( 24 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

I kept the incident secret so as not to throw our entire group of friends into chaos (also to avoid looking pathetic in front of everyone). I agree with a couple of the comments above. She is an annoying gnat. A small puff if air blows her off course. Don't treat her with great significance. Second, keep you head up. She (and your DH) behaved badly, not you. You have absolutely nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of. By acting confident and self assured, you signal that this crap is so far beneath you that you don't see for to engage. And then don't engage. She is no friend and you are justified in being nothing more than cordial. Let your time and manner (not words or nasty looks) make her feel about a inch tall. [ Reply | More ]
