[ - ] My dd started reading simple baby books at 18 months, by 2 1/2 she was reading early reader chapter books. Now almost 6 she can read books like pillars of the earth with different character voices. But I gotta tell you she is the most awkward kid in her class. Don't get me wrong she is very smart, advance vocabulary and you only have to explain something to her once and she gets it. She is off the charts in everything except anything that is social. Think Sheldon (the Big Bang theory). She cannot relate to other people at ALL. I give her a hug and she does not hug me back. She only recently learned to say I love you too after I've said to her. Before that it was ok. She has no problem telling someone that they are (and I'm putting it lightly) not easy on the eyes. Without emotions. She rarely cries unless she is seriously hurt. She has been like this since birth. All the specialist say she is normal. Don't know what to do anymore. 7 Replies [ Reply | Watch | More ]

So now she will feel an even stronger urge to sneak food, since you yell at her when she eats it. She was still hungry after her dinner of grilled cheese and fries (which has like, zero protein or fiber so of course she was still hungry afterwords!) and she knew you wouldn't let her eat more, so she had to sneak it, and then she was punished. If this isn't fake, it's incredibly depressing on so many levels. Stop taking your obese children out for grilled food and french fries, for starters. [ Reply | More ]

But why did you scream at her for eating more?? Either she can't tell when she is hungry or full (because of years of overeating, which is hardly her fault at her age), she was actually still hungry because the meal was nutritionally empty, or she equates food with happiness and she wanted more happiness. Screaming at her is just setting her up for a horrible relationship with food and viewing food as a source of good and bad emotions. [ Reply | More ]

^and after you're done with that, stop using food as a weapon for punishment or reward. No one should be "screamed at" for eating food. I also was talking about manners. It shows a lack of manners for you to scrutinize and feel out of sorts about a GIFT. If there wasn't economic parity with yours, so what? If she's busy with two kids and put the clothes in trash bags, it's unusual but the only person lacking manners seems to be you. Also, there is so much wrong with spending $200 on these two insignificant items I don't know where to begin. LSS, it's too much damn money. Wasteful. [ Reply | More ]

NP - You should like the type of person who gives with the expectation of having a matching gift later in exchange. Gifts shouldn't be given with such expectations. You are being extremely ungracious regarding her gift. She has given something she thought would be useful and included a sweet note with the card. She may not be able to afford more, she may not see the use in an unpractical $100 blanket but has given you things she thought were more practical. You should learn to be both more gracious and grateful. If you can't you should do this woman a favor by distancing yourself. [ Reply | More ]

The clothes are definitely the more thoughtful gift. Stop having hidden expectations and get over yourself. ^^I should add that since your post has things like "less desirable place", "which is preferable", "culturally devoid", etc. it is obvious what your choice is. But for example I live in Baltimore and I don't consider myself in a culturally devoid vacuum but our HHI of 250k gets us a very nice 2 bed/2 bath within walking distance of restaurants, theater, museums, parks, markets/shopping and enough money leftover for private school for 2. I live a pedestrian lifestyle too. I've never been mugged and I've lived here for 15 years. No one except for tourists goes to the inner harbor (and after 10pm, teenagers looking for trouble- generally just with eachother, but if you wander around alone after dark yes there is a chance that one of them is going to show off for his friends and grab your purse), it's basically a strip mall complete with Bubba Gump, Hard Rock Cafe, etc. and no one actually lives there which is why after dark when the tourists are done with their Cheesecake Factory dinners, it's empty except for pockets of trouble. lack of sufficient space makes people crazy/depressed, and sense of culture is developed at home. where do people get the idea that if you don't live in a big city you get zero cultural exposure? people with that mentality are some of the least cultured people i know, even if they live in nyc. Remember Homicide, Life on the Street? In the first episode Robin Williams plays a man who is just walking around Baltimore with his wife when a "vibrant" "diverse" youth shoots his wife for no reason. Even today Baltimore has a higher murder rate than Manhattan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bop_Gun_(Homicide:_Life_on_the_Street) [ Reply | More ]

VERY personal choice, I think. One I wrestle with everyday. I've chosen to stay in NYC (Brooklyn) for the amazing cultural experience, but living in a small 2-bed with kids is tough. And PS our HHI is 600K. [ Reply | More ]

Real people of culture know that good art can and is found in all manner of places, many of which are not in traditional "cultural centers." Poseurs and dilletentes think "real art" is only housed in the five museums or five theaters they've heard of. If you're living in NYC because you think proximity to MOMA automatically makes you more cultured you"re kind of missing the whole point of trying to achieve exposure to great art. [ Reply | More ]

No. In my experience, over-invested moms tend to "high-ball" DCs reading level because they don't understand what a reading level really is- it's about consistency and not their one "best" read. [ Reply | More ]

I would stop operating under the assumption every teacher knows less than you and would stop backseat driving. Parents don't realize how they prompt / compensate / scaffold a kid's performance at home. Of course then later a few years down the road when kid is having issues they complain the school hasn't taught the child to work independently. Try to pull back a little. It's one thing to be involved /concerned... it's another to hover. Seriously. I mean that in a very nice way. [ Reply | More ]

Why do you assume I hover?? I watched dc read as this was part of the homework (have dc read independently and ask a question about the book). How does this make me helicopter? [ Reply | More ]
General Topics 09.01.14, 10:17 PM Flag

You keep assuming teachers are wrong, trying to pull a fast one, and if their feedback doesn't immediately match up with your own impression you assume they are wrong and you're right. I don't know if you are a helicopter ... but you could be. Why not look at it as the teacher sees him in a different setting and has a different way of observing things since she's not his mother? Summer slide makes my blood boil. The idea that a bunch of silly teachers who heard about a study with underprivileged children can convince UMC involved parents that their children must do academic work over the summer or they will lose skills is NUTS. [ Reply | More ]

NP. Your post makes no sense. The reason the underprivileged kids slide compared to more privileged kids is precisely because the privileged kids' parents keep them doing academic work over the summer (whether structured or unstructured). [ Reply | More ]

Parents overestimate reading levels--just b/c your kid can read the words in harry potter doesn't mean that's your dc's reading level. Look up the criteria--it's more complicated than "can actually read it and retell plot." [ Reply | More ]
